Sonographers at Brigham and Women's Hospital will be part of a team that work closely with Radiologists, Maternal Fetal Medicine Physicians, Endocrinologists, and Gynecologists. Under general supervision, the incumbent provides supervision of staff in the assigned imaging areas. Responsible for coordinating and maintaining the efficient utilization of available imaging time and human resources within the imaging area(s). Develops and implements work schedules and assures efficient day to day operations of the imaging area. Assures quality of services and reports directly to the Assistant Clinical Director and indirectly to the Clinical Director. In absence of an Assistant Clinical Director, the Clinical Manager will report directly to the Clinical Director.

The individual must have proven problem-solving skills, to be able to assist and provide leadership and training for Technologists and students. Must be active participant in departmental initiatives. Provides immediate resource to technical and related imaging personnel. Works as Technologist as needed.

  • Provides daily supervision to all imaging personnel in the assigned imaging areas, assigns work. Assists support staff within the division as necessary.

  • Ensures quality and quantity of work done by technical staff, that all examinations are performed in a timely, safe and efficient manner, and that proper protocols are utilized. Ensures completion of all imaging by technologists.

  • Responsible for time tracking and recording of payroll in KRONOS for the imaging area assigned.

  • Assists with the planning, development, and oversight of staffing schedules in the assigned imaging areas. Prepares daily work schedules and assigns/reassigns personnel as required. Assists with division attendance records. Assures proper coverage and on-call coverage. Accounts for approval/denial of vacation/time off requests.

  • Responsible for flexing staff schedules and utilizing per diem staff when necessary to reduce overtime costs and to optimize staff coverage. Responsible for daily personnel decisions within the division.

  • Assists with interviewing and selection of the division technical staff. Provides regular feedback and prepares annual performance appraisal. Holds and documents performance coaching discussions as necessary. Appropriately escalates disciplinary issues to Assistant Clinical Director when formal correction action is warranted.

  • In collaboration with the Clinical Educator, Lead Radiologic or Imaging Technologist, and Assistant Clinical Director, actively participates in the onboarding of new staff and the oversight and mentorship of new and returning technology students. Helps facilitate the ongoing development, training, and continuing education for all technical staff.

  • Ensures effective communication between all shifts and that adequate handoff routinely occurs. As requested, prepares and presents a shift report on all aspects of area's operations.

  • Performs Quality Control checks of exams and equipment as established by the department standards. Possess a thorough knowledge of equipment and troubleshooting techniques. Identifies problems and takes appropriate corrective actions and follow up. Notifies Assistant Clinical Director of equipment repairs and failures and communicates equipment /service issues. In required imaging areas, performs point-of-care (POC) creatinine testing at applicable sites and upon completion of training.

  • Assists with the coordination of preventative maintenance and physicist testing schedules for imaging equipment and computers as required.

  • Monitors adherence to federal, state, hospital, and departmental guidelines according to DPH, TJC, CMS, ACR, etc. regulations. Consistently exemplifies standard and universal precautions.

  • Involved with ongoing Quality Improvement projects.

  • Attends Clinical Operations' meetings when requested to maintain seamless integration of protocols and procedures across all BWH imaging sites.

  • Ensures Electronic Health Record (EHR) schedule templates and information, i.e. patient directions, remain updated.

  • Effectively communicates with all staff, providers, patients and other personnel who utilize imaging services. Explains department procedures, resolves problems and coordinates activities which impact patient care.

  • Ensures appropriate par level and rotation of supplies.

  • Remains flexible to all shift coverage needs. In conjunction with the technologists, assumes on-call coverage and rotates in covering open shifts not covered by staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have graduated from an approved school of Radiologic or Imaging Technology; holds and maintains a current permanent Massachusetts license as required and current certification and registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or equivalent and respective credentialing organization.

  • 3-5 years of progressive experience as a Radiologic or Imaging Technologist. Experience in specified modality preferred. Preferred 1-2 years supervisory experience preferred

  • Associate's degree required. Bachelor's degree preferred.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Effectively communicates and demonstrates professionalism to calmly, concisely, and confidentially resolve conflict and relay information to departmental staff, medical staff, patients and other hospital personnel.

  • Possesses analytical abilities necessary to effectively utilize advanced knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, procedures and anatomy.

  • Adapts to the changing pace within the department, endures frequent interruptions, recognizes emergency situations and responds appropriately.

  • Displays a positive attitude and a professional appearance.

  • Maintains a comprehensive understanding of the Radiology Information Systems and relevant Hospital Information Systems.

  • Exemplifies flexibility and willingness to adapt to the operational needs and presents as a positive representative of BWH Department of Radiology and leadership team.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be prepared to work overtime, holidays, and weekends as needed.

  • Working environment may at times be noisy and experience extreme temperature, humidity, and lighting variations.

  • Minimal exposure to ionizing radiation and/or magnetic fields and radiofrequencies, when adhering to proper safety guidelines.

  • Continuous standing and frequent lifting (linen, supplies, patients, etc.).

  • Periodic exposure to biological substances and unpleasant odors (blood, body secretions/waste), communicable and other diseases.

  • Considerable stress from dealing with a wide variety of hospital staff, patients and families and internal/external conditions or circumstances.
