Radiological Control Division (RCD) maintains and protects the radiological safety and health of BNL employees, the public, and the environment. Our professionals and technicians are certified and provide expertise in support of the overall BNL mission by use of field deployed Facility Support personnel, an accredited Personnel Monitoring service, a fully functional Instrumentation & Calibration facility, expertise in Radiological Engineering and the handling of Isotopes and Special Nuclear Materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide professional Health Physics support and oversight to the Laboratory in the area of Accelerator safety basis.

  • Support the development of Safety Assessment Documents (SADs), Accelerator Safety Envelopes (ASEs), and procedures needed to ensure safe accelerator commissioning and operations.

  • Review and recommend for approval all radiation protection aspects during design, operation, and maintenance of BNL accelerators and associated systems.

  • Review engineering designs for new or modified accelerator/radiological facilities.

  • Participate as a member on organizational radiation safety committees.

  • Participate as a member of the Laboratory's Safety Basis/Nuclear Safety Sub-Committee.

  • Participate as a member of Internal Readiness Reviews (IRRs) and Accelerator Readiness Reviews (ARRs).

  • Perform documented assessments of key accelerator safety programs such as Configuration Management (CM), Unreviewed Safety Issue (USI) Process, and hazard identification as a part of BNL's Contractor Assurance Program.

  • Analyze and review Radioactive Waste Control data packages.

  • Network with other DOE contractor accelerator safety professionals.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, engineering, or other closely related field of study.

  • At least three years progressively responsible related work experience.

  • Familiarity with DOE (i.e., 10CFR835), or NRC (i.e., 10CFR20) or Agreement State occupational radiation protection regulations and applicable standards.

  • Experience performing or evaluating hazards analyses or radiological shielding designs.

  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Masters' degree in physics, engineering, or closely related field of study.

  • Minimum seven (7) years progressively responsible related work experience that demonstrates a sound knowledge of current principles and practices in a specialized field of engineering.

  • Specialized certifications such as National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT), Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Successful completion of one part of the American Board of Health Physics Certification (CHP) Examination.

  • Work experience at a particle accelerator or in a position providing oversight to an operating facility's safety basis.

  • Served on an Accelerator Readiness Review (ARR) team or other facility readiness review team.

  • Familiarity with Monte Carlo simulation codes (e.g., MCNP, FLUKA, etc.) and their use in validating facility shielding.

Other Information:

  • Occasional travel (once or twice a year) to other DOE National Labs.

  • The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate position level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, as well as years of relevant experience.

Environmental, Health and Safety Considerations:

  • Moderate lifting (less than 30 lbs.)

  • Alertness, hearing alarms, understanding speech and speaking/communication.

  • Candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on breadth and depth of knowledge.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $94350 - $155850 / . You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
