Work Hours/Shift:

PRN Variable Shift

You Will Be Responsible For:

A. Clinical Performance Standards
1.Collects pertinent data about the patient and the procedure. Uses consistent and appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others and health care providers. The collection of

information is determined by the patient needs or condition.
2.Reconfirms patient identification and verifies the procedure requested or prescribed
3.Verifies patient pregnancy status when appropriate.
4.Determines whether the patient has been appropriately prepared for the procedure.
5.Measures patient size when needed.
6.Selects KVP, MA and Time when needed. Selects proper focal film distance to obtain satisfactory radiographs.
7.Elicits confidence and cooperation from the patient, the public and health care providers by providing timely communication and effective instruction.
8.Provides accurate explanations and instructions at an appropriate time and at a level the patient can understand.
9.Addresses and documents patient questions and concerns regarding the procedure when appropriate.
10. Refers questions about diagnosis, treatment or prognosis to the patient's physician.
11. Consults with other departments such as patient transportation, nursing, scheduling and registration for patient services.
12. Develops collaborative partnerships with other health care providers in the interest of diagnostic and therapeutic quality and cost effectiveness and safety.
13. Monitors the patient's physical condition during the procedure
14. Reviews images to determine if additional images will enhance the diagnostic value of the procedure.
15. Documents diagnostic, therapeutic and patient data in the RIS and PACS. Documentation must be timely, accurate, concise and complete.
16. Maintains cleanliness and general orderliness of the examination room, radiographic equipment and processing areas.
17. Reports deficiencies and malfunctions to the Imaging Services Manager.

B. Radiation Safety and Protection
1.Uses radiation restrictive devices on all examinations.
2.Uses protective lead aprons during procedures when appropriate.
3.Utilizes gonadal shielding when appropriate.
3.Wears TLD badges daily.
4.Reviews quarterly radiation exposure reports.

C. Age Specific Standards
1.Demonstrates the knowledge and skills required to collect and document data related to physical, psychosocial and developmental stages and complete interventions according to Radiology procedures.
2.Communicates with patient/parent/guardian/significant other regarding procedural issues and/or concerns based on level of comprehension, understanding and readiness to learn.
3.Maintains a safe environment utilizing appropriate equipment and safety devices, based on patient's age and level of cognition.
4.Performs Radiological procedures utilizing approaches and equipment appropriate to patient's age and size.
5.Provides educational support based on patient's Radiological procedure.
6.Demonstrates knowledge and skills of radiation safety parameters pertinent to Radiological procedures.
7.Provides Radiographic procedures to all patients regardless of age, race or sex. Patient population includes patients of all ages from newborn through the geriatric population

D. Performs Quality Assurance and Quality Control Functions
1.Assures that all patient films are properly identified.
2.Uses R & L lead markers on all patient films.
3.Verifies correct exam ordered on requisition by comparing to physician order in chart or on prescription. Brings any discrepancies to attention of Lead Technologist or Imaging Services Manager.
4.Reviews all images taken for technical quality and repeats images as necessary.

E. Performs Additional Duties as Assigned and Required

Qualifications

What You Will Need:

  • Demonstrated technical skills and aptitudes related to specimen collection / education for all age groups.

  • Demonstrated technical skills for use of centrifuge and specimen aliquotting.

  • Ability to read text and numbers in English, with demonstrated ability to comprehend, measure, reason, match and problem solve.

  • Ability to learn and apply computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices.

  • Mature judgment and the ability to handle confidential information within Florida Hospital guidelines and applicable regulations.

  • Ability to handle infectious biological specimens, caustics, toxic chemicals and/or irritants appropriately and safely.

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in written form with persons of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective and professional manner.

  • Ability to respond appropriately to buzzers, bells, flashing lights, and pagers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Minimum of one (1) year of laboratory or healthcare-related experience

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of phlebotomy experience including all age groups

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION PREFERRED:

  • National Phlebotomy board certification through ASCP, AMT, or ASPT

Job Summary:

The Laboratory Assistant provides laboratory support through receipt and distribution of biological specimens within the laboratory and prepares specimens for testing by licensed personnel using established safety practices. Specimens are also prepared for submission to the reference laboratory, and assistance is provided to technologists as needed. The Laboratory Assistant exhibits professionalism and actively participates in outstanding customer services, creating an atmosphere of trust and confidence through verbal interactions on the telephone and in person. Work customarily involves practical knowledge of various clinical laboratory procedures, and may include clerical and other laboratory support functions as needed. The Laboratory Assistant must work well under pressure and be sensitive to the confidentiality of protected health information. The position requires exercise of judgment under general supervision.

C. Performs Quality Control 1) Performs profiles daily on the MRI scanner 2) Reports all equipment failure or problems to Director of Imaging Services. 3) Maintains equipment in a clean and orderly fashion. D. Performs Quality Assurance 1) Performs all QA activities as recommended by the Hospital and JCAHO. 2) Helps to maintain the MRI procedure manual. 3) Completes history form on each patient 4) Observes and insures safe practices for patients, visitors and personnel. 5) Attends staff, patient care and in-service meetings as requested in order to keep abreast of all Hospital and departmental changes. E.
