We are seeking a highly motivated, organized, and talented Radioisotope Production Technician to join our growing team to work on our expanding radioisotope production demands. This position resides in the REDC Laboratory Chemical Operations Group within the Isotope Processing and Manufacturing Division (IPMD), Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Utilizing the unique capabilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and related radiochemical and nuclear processing facilities, IPMD supports a variety of projects supplying difficult to produce radioisotopes essential for medical, research, and industrial applications.

The IPMD group is responsible for separating, dispensing, and preparing a variety of radioisotope shipments for the missions of the private organizations, commercial institutions Department of Energy (DOE) and other government agencies. Our current focus is on processing and development of new capabilities for radioisotopes used in medical, scientific, and commercial applications including actinides, Ra-223, Ac-225, Ac-227 and Th-227.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Process isotopes via documented procedures in hot cell and glovebox facilities

  • Assist technical staff and other technicians with operations in chemical and radiochemical laboratories

  • Engage with scientists, engineers, and technicians to establish solutions to complex problems

  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements

  • Assist with the coordination of the radioactive and hazardous waste disposal, manage the chemical inventory within the facility, and interact with other team members to resolve processing-related problems

  • Maintain logbooks and batch record documentation

Basic Qualifications:

  • Successful candidates must have the minimum of an AS degree in science/engineering discipline and a minimum of five years of relevant experience, or the equivalent combination of a degree and experience

  • Excellent communication skills are essential to ensure effective interaction with peers, technical and non- technical staff.

  • Must be self-motivated, able to work as a team, and a committed to safe work practices

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS degree in science, engineering, or related field

  • Experience in wet-chemistry operations and nuclear detection methods, including gamma-ray spectroscopy

  • Experience in quality assurance documentation, GLP, and or cGMP experience

  • Experience in isotope production activities and chemical purification techniques

  • Experience using glove boxes and/or hot cell manipulators for isotope production

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory

Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre- hire physical will be required after offer.
