The Radiation Safety Officer shall be responsible for the institutional radiation protection programs and for the implementation of policies established to ensure compliance with all State and Federal regulatory requirements. Develops, implements, and maintains multiple Radiation Safety programs, policies, and procedures for medical and research radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines.

Education

  • Must be able to satisfy the medical RSO degree and/or coursework requirements as described in 10 CFR 35.50 of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Training for Radiation Safety Officer.

  • Must be certified by a specialty board whose certification process has been recognized by the Commission or an Agreement State

  • Must hold a Master's or Doctor's Degree in Physics, Medical Physics, other Physical Science, Engineering, or Applied Mathematics from an accredited college or university

Work Experience

  • Must be able to satisfy the training and experience requirements as described in 10 CFR Part 35 (.50 and .57) and 10 CFR Part 33 for a Type A Broad Scope license, in conjunction with the education pathway selected in 35.50. Experience to oversee activity under 10 CFR 35.100, 200, 300, 400, and 600.

  • Submission of the completed NRC Form 313A with preceptor signature authorization is desirable.

  • Have 5 or more years of professional experience in health physics (graduate training may be substituted for no more than 2 years of the required experience) including at least 3 years in applied health physics; or

  • Have 2 years of full-time practical training and/or supervised experience in medical physics under the supervision of a medical physicist who is certified in medical physics by a specialty board recognized by the Commission or an Agreement State; or in clinical nuclear medicine facilities providing diagnostic or therapeutic services

  • Has completed a structured educational program consisting of both 200 hours of classroom and laboratory training and

  • One year of full-time radiation safety experience under the supervision of the individual identified as the Radiation Safety Officer on a Commission or an Agreement State license or permit issued by a Commission master material licensee that authorizes similar type(s) of use(s) of byproduct material.

Certifications

Board certification by the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine (ABNM), the American Board of Radiology (ABR), the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP), the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) or current professional designation as a Certified Health Physicist (CHP).

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Strong working knowledge of current regulations related to a radiation safety program.

  • Able to perform complex dosimetry evaluations for internal exposure, external exposure and skin contamination events and ensure proper documentation of evaluations and dose assignments.

  • Considerable ability to work on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of business trends and organizational objectives.

  • Proven track record as a subject matter expert by internal and external RP/EHS professionals and internal business colleagues.

  • Ability to assess and operate in hazardous, controlled environments including radiological fields and confined areas.

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of required job information.

  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.

  • Must have effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout required job processes.

  • Shall have the ability to work a flexible schedule, extended hours, nights, evenings, weekends, holidays, as needed.

Job Duties

  • Review, update, and implement a written Radiation Protection Program policy compliant with the provisions of Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations and Ochsner local policies.

  • Serve on the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC).

  • Review dosimetry reports and present ALARA reviews to the RSC.

  • Perform annual audits of the radiation safety programs for presentation to the RSC.

  • Provide RSC meeting agendas and minutes.

  • Maintain and amend radioactive material licenses.

  • Advise leadership on technical and regulatory issues, and the strategic direction of the Radiation Safety Program.

  • Interpret regulations and apply them to the program.

  • Serve on the Institutional Review Board to review research protocols for radiation use and to write radiation risk statements for protocols.

  • Evaluate/recommend radiation safety controls for proposed new operations and facilities, or upgrades for existing operations, in accordance with ALARA principles, using experience, technical knowledge and software applications.

  • Provide consultation by phone and email regarding radiation safety issues. Develop and present radiation safety training programs to individuals and groups, including introductory radiation safety training and special topic/audience training as needed.

  • Maintain awareness of evolving technologies in radiation detection and dosimetry.

  • Respond to emergency situations involving radioactive materials.

  • Participate with the site emergency response team by coordinating and/or providing technical information and guidance during radiological emergencies.

Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.

Mechanical lifting devices (carts, dollies, etc.) or team lifts should be utilized.

Must be able to travel throughout and between facilities.

Must be able to work a flexible work schedule (e.g. 24/7, weekend, holiday, on call availability).

Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue.

The incumbent works in a patient care area; works in an area where patients enter; works directly with patients; and/or works with specimens that could contain communicable diseases. There may be an occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.

Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste. The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
