The Research Assistant II in the department of Radiation Oncology Research at MD Anderson Cancer Center provides responsible technical assistance in carrying out various research projects and assistance in maintaining efficient functioning of the laboratory. This Research Assistant II position requires scientific and technical background, independent decision making, judgment and organizational skills.
The ideal candidate will have some prior experience with sterile techniques for cell culture experiments, molecular biology (such as western blotting, PCR, etc.) and handling animals.
About 50% of the individual's effort will be the oversight of the breeding, husbandry, weaning and general management of the laboratory's mouse colony.
Need to have skills in collecting tail biopsies, extracting DNA and performing accurate PCR genotyping.
Can accurately record phenotypic data which include, but are not limited to, weighing and describing tissues and tumors as part of necropsies, collecting blood samples, and administering medications or radiation therapy to animals.
Will need to have strong organizational skills to maintain and keep track of transgenic and knockout mouse colonies, perform genotyping and phenotypic analysis of mouse phenotypes.
Should have some special skills such as tumor xenografts, tail vein injection, intestinal crypt isolation, and necropsy are highly desirable.
The other 50% of the individual's effort will be performing key experiments related to the analysis of hypoxia and growth factor signaling in cancer, diabetes and other human diseases. The project will involve the analysis of gene expression and proteomic changes in cells and tissues using various methods including, but not limited to, western blots, quantitative PCR, immunohistochemistry, and gene expression profiling.
Will utilize various basic molecular biology techniques including gene cloning, and single gene mutagenesis, cell culture experiments, transfection for gene knockdown or gene overexpression experiments.
Maintain laboratory environment including ordering of supplies and organization of supplies and equipment
Maintain clear and accurate records of laboratory data, both written and electronic, accessible at all times by the supervisor.
Communicate effectively with supervisor through informal discussion on a daily basis, weekly one-on-one meeting, laboratory meetings, and department seminars.
Collaborate and communicate effectively with other members in the lab.
Sometime may need to serve as Lab Rep on department Lab Council by timely and consistent attendance at all meetings and communicating clearly all current and new policies, guidelines and information back to all lab staff.
Required: Bachelor's degree with major course work in one of the basic sciences.
Preferred: Bachelor's or Master's degree in one of the following sciences: Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Physiology, or Pharmacology.
Required: Two years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with a Master's degree.
