JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
We are searching for a junior engineer or software developer to join our Image Science and Computer Vision Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. You will assist our research efforts in a unique problem area that has applications in defense, law enforcement, security, disaster relief, human geography, disaster preparedness, and first response. Our highly collaborative team is comprised of adaptable, curious, creative, lateral thinkers who are in both traditional and non-traditional backgrounds and multidisciplinary points-of-view. We offer opportunities to grow, explore, and experience multiple roles and are looking for someone who is interested in pursuing higher degrees in their field of study.
Learn from and interact with geospatial imagery analysts to understand and automate workflows and improve human processes to advance the discovery and modeling of associations, trends, patterns, and system dynamics
Assist with and contribute to the creation of processes and algorithms to transform traditional GEOINT imagery and open source data into spatio-temporal information describing places, events, and activities
Learn and investigate the physics of remote sensing systems to associate real world objects to known signatures and doctrines
Learn and apply the scientific method across multiple disciplines to advance Image Science and Computer Vision and develop automated analytics through systematic experimentation
Assist with or conduct experiment-driven applied research and development
Contribute to or conduct analysis and complete scientific research projects and develop geospatial algorithms while collaborating among diverse domains to further scientific understanding and analytic tools
Receive technical and professional mentorship to learn about conducting efficient experiment-driven applied research investigations on diverse multi-disciplinary teams
Engage in research efforts ranging from proof-of-concept through integrated production systems
This position can be filled as a Level 1 or Level 2, depending on your education and experience. Minimally requires a Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Science discipline for a Level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level positions.
Additional responsibilities for a level 2 include:
Conduct Computer Vision experiments/tests int he laboratory/field to test, prove or modify theoretical propositions on basis of research findings
May mentor and/or train lower level employees and students in the department and/or division
Required skills/experience areas include:
Knowledge of or experience in a field directly applicable or highly related to Image Science, Remote Sensing, Engineering, Computer Sciences, or Geospatial Sciences
The design of image algorithms, performing analysis, and designing or applying meaningful metrics to measure results
Computer programming in one or more of the following: Python; R; Java; C++; and/or Matlab
Preferred skills/experience areas include:
Git, GUI development, open source scientific computation, computer vision, physics modeling, or machine learning tools
DoD/IC Analysis or Operational environments, performing DoD/IC research and development
An active government security clearance
Your working location can be a hybrid of on-site/work from home, located in State College, PA.
