Microsoft is looking for someone to join the Quantum Systems group and collaborate with a diverse group of engineers to bring together the components and expertise for a scalable quantum system. As a Quantum Systems Mechanical Engineering Manager, you will work with physicists, hardware designers, fabrication engineers, and researchers to develop the cryogenic computing technologies necessary to make quantum computing a reality. We are looking for a proven engineering leader to help guide the direction of technical teams across multiple initiatives.

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field AND 12+ years experience in industry or in a research and development environment

  • OR Master's Degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years experience in industry or in a research and development environment

  • OR Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years experience in industry or in a research and development environment

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years people management experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field AND 15+ years experience in industry or in a research and development environment

  • OR Master's Degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field AND 12+ years experience in industry or in a research and development environment

  • OR Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years experience in industry or in a research and development environment

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 2+ years managing a large (greater than 20) cross-functional team.

  • 7+ years people management experience.

Quantum Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 - $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 - $304,200 per year.

#Quantum

This role involves overseeing the development and test efforts of a multi-disciplinary team, comprised of both internal and external resources. This role will be responsible for the application of robust engineering practices in the development, test, and data analysis work of the teams. We are looking for candidates who are passionate about their own contribution as they are empowering and inspiring others.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Manage a diverse team comprising specialists in Mechanical and Cryogenic Engineering, Physics, and Cryofridge design

  • Lead setting up infrastructure to include

  • Mechanical/Model shop Facilities

  • Standard Tool flow including

  • Mechanical CAD

  • Thermal and structural simulations

  • PDM

  • Standardize and drive the hardware design review process for mechanical parts and assembly

  • Establish mechanical design expertise in reliability and design for manufacturing

  • Drive robust simulation and mechanical design in conjunction with these teams

  • Architecture

  • Cryogenic Fridge Systems

  • Custom Electronics Instrumentation

  • Custom RF component

  • Readout and Control

  • Packaging

  • Theory and Simulation

  • Create innovations in test methodology that are applied across the Quantum program

  • Collaborate with partner teams to objectively resolve technical conflicts by gathering perspectives from all stakeholders and applying robust engineering principles

  • Contribute to decision making and strategy for the work undertaken across multiple teams.

  • Connect and communicate with the local team and broad program spanning multiple locations worldwide.
