The QUALITY CONSULTANT FOR OPERATIONS position is responsible for developing, maintaining and providing the necessary analyses that allows the organization to assess and improve the performance of its health care delivery processes, specifically focused on UWMC Operations Excellence, external quality reporting, and internal quality improvement projects. The Quality Consultant for Operations supports the work of Medical Center Administrators, Clinicians and Physicians by combining their knowledge of information systems, healthcare data, and decision support applications with analytic, project management, and presentation skills in order to provide the information necessary for effective clinical decision making.

This position may participate in the design of information systems and provides user education on decision support applications and quantitative analysis. The Quality Consultant uses their knowledge of QI Tools and Techniques to make specific recommendations to improve the care delivery process.

Quality Consultant for Operations relies upon their own expertise to make decisions regarding the design, type and level of analysis and level of focus that their assigned projects require. They must proactively communicate recommendations to leadership and others based on the trending and analysis that they perform in order for leadership to stay informed to be able to prioritize improvement work.

This position requires independent and collaborative decision making, professional communication with executives and clinicians, as well as an understanding of available IT and operational resources. This position must routinely exercise a high degree of critical thinking and problem solving. This individual must first consult with faculty and staff to determine reporting requirements, then design, create and test solutions to ensure validity and applicability of data being reported.

Leaders and other rely upon the Quality Consultant for Operations expertise to lead them through their performance data and help them understand what the trending says about where they are going and where they need to place future focus. They also rely upon them to be up to date with regulatory and certification requirements which they are responsible for communicating to leadership, faculty and staff when needed. This position will be frequently consulted for their expertise.

The created tools, analysis, and presentations delivered by this position directly impacts daily staffing resources at the medical center, as well as the direction and efforts of departmental and system wide process improvement initiatives. These initiatives are undertaken to improve quality and efficiency of service at UWMC, and the results have a direct impact on fiscal reimbursement, operational expenses, external quality programs, and patient satisfaction.

  1. Provides reliable, valid, and goal-oriented information for the purpose of highlighting and developing targets for performance and operational improvement. Creates and maintains novel tools and processes to ensure delivery of this information to leadership. Utilizes various UWMC tools including Spotfire visualizations, Performance Manager, Enterprise Data Warehouse, Vizient Clinical Database, Tableau or Clinical Resource Manager to obtain, analyze, and disseminate information to the organization. Assists in defining valid organizational quality goals related to Operation Excellence and external agency metrics.
    2.Supports departments and performance improvement teams to improve quality, safety and service. Support includes, but is not limited to:

  • Engaging with departments/teams through project completion including project management.

  • Assist departments/teams to evaluate improvement and create recommendations.

  • Works with departments/teams to sustain the gains made over time.
    3.Utilizes internal and external clinical and operational data to develop and support UWMC Scorecards using Access to Excellence, Spotfire, or Tableau visualization tools. Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Project Management

  • Development of detailed functional specifications

  • System design/redesign
    4.Provides practical, targeted education of performance improvement data and applications, so that staff members can articulate their own performance and that of their department. Develops organizational capacity to obtain, interpret, and utilize performance improvement data.
    5.Continually assesses the quality and integrity of data. Analyzes and makes recommendations for improvements.
    6.Surveys the external landscape to anticipate changes to the regulatory and national reporting environment as it relates to quality, safety, and service. Disseminates information to stakeholders in the organization to enhance organizational agility.
    7.Performs other duties as assigned.


Bachelor's Degree in Health Administration, Business Analytics, Health Information, or Related Field
4 to 5 Years Experience:

  • Ability to prepare complex analysis and interpretations with high degree of accuracy.

  • Proven analytical, verbal and written communications skills.

  • Ability to utilize numerous computer applications spreadsheets, databases and report writers.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management.

  • Ability to formulate recommendations and interpret information.

  • Ability to work independently with a minimum level of supervision.

  • Ability to create and maintain relationships with all levels of the organization

A combination of education and experience may satisfy stated education and experience requirements


Master's Degree in Health Administration, Business Analytics, Health Information, or Related Field preferred.

Experience with SQL or a willingness to learn

Experience with Tableau/Spotfire or a willingness to learn
