Objectives:

  • Complete introduction to and demonstrate a commitment to the Refresco business, culture and core beliefs.

  • Complete understanding of the location processes, CPMS and equipment.

  • A thorough understanding of SQFi Level 3 requirements, customer's quality standards and company quality management systems along with an understanding of how all departments impact/affect internal and external customers. Complete the SQF 2000 Certification.

  • Demonstrate an understanding and continued enforcement of the Corrective Action process.

  • Management of Inventory at Risk process.

  • Review and assess direct reports, development plans and personnel decisions.

  • Manage all audits for the location ... approximately 4 audits per year.

Sub-Objectives:

Work daily with Quality Control personnel and all departments to ensure that the QMS, CPMS, inventory control procedures and CI processes are robust and driving tangible results for the business.

  • Process discipline.

  • SOP standardization.

  • Development of a Quality Culture

  • Yield/Waste Management

Technical Skills Required:

  • Food Science -- This knowledge allows for an understanding of chemical reactions that might impact product food safety and food quality.

  • Microbiology -- Plant and equipment cleaning and sanitation effectiveness. Product compliance to standards.

  • Mathematics -- Formula validation and any batch adjustments needed based on nonconformance.

Team skills:

  • This individual will work with all managers, supervisors and plant employees on various continuous improvement projects such as yield improvement, waste reductions, sanitation validations, nonconformance, audits, and inventory at risk, instrument validation and Alchemy. This person will directly supervise up to 12 direct reports at any given time. They will be supervising Team Leads, Laboratory Technicians and Batchers. They have a responsibility to weekly coordinate the work schedule for direct reports based on the production schedule in the plant.

Long-Term Planning and Strategy:

  • Train and develop a qualified team of associates. Identify hipos and work with PM to build a next level development plan.

  • Own all the Quality processes at the location and always strive for new methods to make improvements.

  • Be responsible for all audits at the location including quarterly internal audits of the entire location with involvement of the production and warehouse team.

  • When technical equipment problems or nonconformance's come up, allow for training opportunities with direct reports.

  • Interaction with the PD team, plant manager, and internal and external customers while reviewing CAP's and nonconformances.

  • Use the data collection and analysis tools available to improve and predict performance. Identify gaps in data and/or tools and drive solutions for them to drive the business forward.

  • Projects may include but are not limited to driving improvements with SQFi, yield improvements, change from QC environment to QA, implementing new business units, inventory control procedures and Alchemy.

General Summary Provide overall support to the Biscuit and Bakery Business Unit by providing Food Safety / Quality responsibilities as outlined further. Supervises the plant documentation systems, which includes the control of quality systems documents (policies, procedures, work instructions, record-keeping) and formulas (Optiva, SAP and floor formulas). Manages the food safety inspection and corrective/preventive action programs. Supports commercialization activities for new products from special batch phase through initial production. Investigates plant non-conforming product incidents and consumer complaints, conducting root cause analysis and leading corrective action efforts. Coordinates HACCP / Food Safety Plan risk assessments and scheduled reviews. Provides direct supervision to QA Technician / Analyst team in support of structured product inspection programs, laboratory testing, environmental monitoring, and calibration activities. Principal Accountability * Provide overall support to the Biscuit and Bakery Business Unit as outlined below: * Participate in Daily Direction Setting (DDS) meetings, own mtg action items, collaborate cross-functionally with mtg representation to improve key operational metrics (SPQDC). * Manage documentation critical to quality systems, compliance, and formulation. * Support commercialization activities / new product development for the bakery. * Lead Food Safety continuous improvement efforts (complaint reduction, program reassessments, data collection systems, training). * Assess and disposition raw materials for suitability / shelf life testing. * Manage food safety inspection and corrective / preventive action programs. * Lead and coordinate other Food Safety / Quality program efforts such as SQF certification audits, facility verification / validation activities, HACCP / Food Safety Program, Raw Material Bulk Handling Systems, Food Security Improvements, etc. * Support sanitation program initiatives, environmental programs, cleaning verification & validation. * Provide direct supervision to QA Technicians and Analyst team that support environmental microbiological monitoring program, laboratory testing activities, calibration program, structured product inspection programs, and allergen validation activities. Job Complexity * Manage Pepperidge Farm QA documentation including creating new documents, revising existing documents, determining training needs, overseeing the approval and distribution processes, maintaining document control database and coordinating document reviews. Manage review, storage and archiving of quality records. Fulfill requests for data and reports (ex. Corporate, environmental). * Manage product formulas by creating/revising plant floor formulas, ensuring alignment with approved Optiva formulas. SAP Power User responsible for creating, activating and maintaining BOMs, calculating cases per batch information, ingredient shelf life monitoring, and creating batch assignments. Schedule and coordinate audits to ensure formula system integrity. * Lead plant internal quality and food safety inspections.. Create and coordinate schedule, coordinate training, qualification and calibration of auditors, develop checklists, generate reports and follow-through with corrective action assignees to ensure CARs are completed, effectiveness is verified and audits are closed. Participate in programs as an auditor/inspector. * Champions plant traceability systems and mock recall exercises for ingredients, packaging and finished product. Executes plant-scheduled and Corporate-initiated trace exercises, including requests for mock recalls at the third-party DC level. Leads plant food defense team by conducting team meetings, audits and assessments. * Responsible for plant analytical, physical, chemical, and microbiological testing program by performing sampling and testing, reporting results, analyzing for trends and coordinating corrective action. Responsible for validation of sampling and test methods. Includes finished product, ingredient, process, shelf-life and environmental testing and programs. . * Lead investigations of in-plant quality incidents (foreign material, nonconforming product) and consumer complaints, identifying root causes and facilitating corrective action with plant teams. Interprets and reports consumer complaint data trends and facilitates action plans. * Function as HACCP / Food Safety team member responsible for conducting risk assessments and organizing program reassessments for continuous improvement. * Identify opportunities and design plans for expanded use of the plant electronic data collection system, anticipating future applications. * Cross-train in other QA tasks to function as back-up to QA team members. * In the absence of the Quality Assurance Supervisor, the appropriate responsibilities will be shown utilizing the organizational chart to cover critical food safety responsibilities Job Specifications Minimum education required: BS Food Science Degree - 4 years Years of relevant experience: 4-8 years in food industry, sanitation experience preferred Knowledge, skills, and abilities required: * Experience in the food industry plant environment with an understanding of manufacturing processes * Practical knowledge and application of food safety principles (ex. Regulatory, PCQI, HACCP, SQF, GMPs, food microbiology) * Practical knowledge and application of quality systems * Strong technical acumen - ability to troubleshoot a problem, involve other stakeholders as necessary, and brainstorm potential root causes. * Strong interpersonal skills and leadership abilities * Strong verbal and written communication skills * Effective abilities in organizing and deductive thinking * Computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office software, able to master other software * Proficient knowledge of SPC * Able to communicate at any organizational level * Effective presentation skills * Promotes engagement & diversity * Ability to work effectively lead by example and coach others within a team-based high performing organization Working Conditions Up to 10 % travel.
