Overview

The New York Blood Center provides blood products for New York and surrounding states. The QC/Reference Lab plays an important role at the New York Blood Center and is responsible for testing and monitoring the quality of the blood products to ensure that regulatory requirements are met. The amount and type of testing is diversified from operating the Automated Hematology analyzer to performing manual testing. The QC/Reference Laboratory is also supportive in all validations that require testing for regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

The clinical laboratory technologist position entails following the established and approved protocols of the department of health, performs clinical laboratory procedures and examinations and any other tests or procedures conducted by a clinical laboratory, including maintaining equipment and records, and performing quality assurance activities related to examination performance.

This position is responsible for performing product/patient/donor as testing required so that components are distributed in a timely manner to the customer.

  • Performs daily QC on hematology analyzer. Can trouble shoot issues as they arise and take the proper steps to correct the problem. Notifies management as necessary.

  • Performs hematological pre and post testing on specimens received from the collection sites and performs accurate data entry of all results.

  • Identifies and communicates any abnormal values to the appropriate staff.

  • Performs Titer Testing

  • Performs required maintenance on all equipment within the department.

  • Performs monthly quality control of blood components and tracks amount tested to meet monthly requirements as per regulatory agencies.

  • Performs required QC of the BacT equipment and generates daily reports.

  • Prepares and inoculates single donor platelet samples for bacterial detection testing employing sterile technique and performs bacterial detection testing on cellular therapy products.

  • Tests units to qualify them for Pathogen Reduction process.

  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment and follows all procedures, practices, SOPs, regulations and guidelines.

  • Takes hospital orders and accurately process patient samples and performs platelet antibody screening and cross-matching, if applicable.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's or higher degree from a program with a major in biology, chemistry, or the physical sciences, and an advanced certificate in clinical laboratory technology, or education and training sufficient to qualify for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist prior to 2009 as specified in NYS-ED Regulation 79-13.4

Experience:

  • Experience in a laboratory setting is preferred.

License & certification:

  • Current active NY State License as a Clinical Lab Technologist, or

  • Current active NYS-ED issued Provisional Permit leading to a full license as a Clinical Lab Technologist.

For applicants who will perform this position in New York City or Westchester County, the proposed hourly salary is $44.89/hr. to $52.82/hr. For applicants who will perform this position outside of New York City or Westchester County, salary will reflect local market rates and be commensurate with the applicant's skills, job-related knowledge, and experience.
