PPG's Cleveland, Ohio, automotive coatings plant is PPG's largest manufacturing and technical center for automotive coatings in North America and is situated on a 42-acre site in the city's West Park area. The plant produces a full spectrum of coatings products for automotive original equipment manufacturers, including electrocoat, clearcoat, topcoat, waterborne and solvent-based products. In 1947, PPG purchased the facility from Forbes Varnish Company, which began operations there in 1907.

QA Technicians contribute to the production process by testing, reducing, applying and otherwise preparing laboratory quantities of production intermediates and finished goods, both in wet form and as a dried film. QA Technicians at a level I or Sr. QA Technician position contribute further by determining approval status of finished goods based on set wet form and dried film specifications. QA Technicians at level I or a Sr. QA Technician level will also be responsible for customer submissions.

QA Technicians at all levels accomplish these goals through their technical skills, and by effectively and efficiently directing resources. This position impacts the cost of production and customer perception and thus overall profitability by affecting samples per batch, adjustments per batch, cycle time and quality of submissions.

PPG is seeking a Quality Control Shader Technician to join our Cleveland team. Responsibilities of this role include the following:

  • Ability to operate color instruments and interpret data

  • Knowledge of color theory and principals

  • Use of Colorportal

  • Good communication between shifts and departments

  • Ability to multi-task

  • Use of Excel

  • Ability to run all properties tests for all accounts

Experience and Education

High School diploma or equivalent. College chemistry and math are desirable-- Bachelor's degree a plus. The Tech must have the ability to understand record and verbalize detailed information accurately. Must pass color test, as this position is a possible pathway to becoming a Shader.

Functional and Technical Skills

The Shader Tech must be observant, accurate, and able to follow directions, and perform tasks in a clean, safe and timely manner. The incumbent must be able to lift over 25 pounds in order to handle materials. Basic knowledge of mathematics and scientific principles. Color shading experience preferred. Incumbent must possess interpersonal and communication skills necessary to effectively communicate with laboratory technicians, applications personnel, chemists, manufacturing associates, QA Engineers, other shaders along with internal or external customers.

The QA Color Shader is assigned specific color responsibility for automotive OEM products, including Waterbase, Solventbase and Primers. The QA Color Shader evaluates production batches for color, tests physical properties, and adjusts as needed to the required color tolerances of the code. The QA Color Shader is accountable for batch approval status and completing customer submission packages. Direct interaction with QA Technicians, Applications and Manufacturing is required on a daily basis to meet production schedule expectations. A key attribute of this function is working well across areas and ensuring upfront problem resolution tools with QA and Production Engineers to resolve batch related concerns. Key metrics observed by the QA Color Shader are samples per batch and QA cycle time, both key measures in productivity and cost controls. The candidate will participate in continuous improvement activities by utilizing adjustment histories and contribute to the formula optimization process. The QA Color Shader ensures the timeliness and integrity of OEM color programs by working with marketing services, technical and customers to communicate current programs, resolve color problems and assist in the development of future color program strategies. The following are key requirements, or areas that the QA Color Shader must develop: 1. Knowledge and performances of test methods and procedures required in batch QC evaluations 2. Batch color and property adjustment to required specifications 3. Prepares submission and pre-ship packages to the customer. 4. Communicates daily account activities to the incoming shift, team person, technical and or others as appropriate for effective testing continuation 24 hours per day 5. Attends and provides required data for batch investigations and team meetings 6. Performs 5S housekeeping requirements 7. Participates and supports local QA and plant wide goal objectives The QA Color Shader will work directly with QA Management on specific batch needs, but also maintain some level of working relationship with members of the Service Teams to ensure communications of batch status, COA and submission requirements. Work Shift Hours: 5pm to 5am for 12 hour rotating shifts. In summer may be moving to 3 shifts and only 8 hours. Experience and Education Experience with color match (visual and numerical) with background in automotive quality levels. The QA Color Shader must have a high school diploma, chemistry degree preferred, and years of QA or Technical color experience. Excellent interpersonal skills are required to maintain effective relations with the plant, technical, field and within the QA group. QA Color Shader will be required to complete a color assessment (local or professional) as a segment of the interview process.
