This position is responsible for directing and coordinating quality inspection of ingredients, and materials produced in the manufacturing processes by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates, and supporting the leadership team and employees at the site.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain most current product specifications making sure latest version is active in all departments

  • Incoming ingredient vendor approval and organize supplier approval questionnaires, Create, maintain and train all documents required in the SQF auditing system including SOP's, SSOP's for the lab and production floor

  • Set up controls as needed to check lab procedures and equipment, conduct and report quarterly lab proficiency testing. Responsible for all send outs - customer samples, outside lab submittals and customer 'sample requests' responsible for accurate COA's being sent to the customer. Responsible for coordinating resampling of finished product in a timely fashion to distinguish good from reject product

  • Manage accurate reporting of all in-bound product, materials, supplies and inventories in storage.

  • Maintain environmental program. Maintain lab sample retention program

  • Maintain proper maintenance of lab equipment and schedule calibrations for plant equipment related to Quality

  • Develop, maintain and train all laboratory SOP's

  • Develop best methods and drive continuous improvement and efficiencies for QA

  • Manage Quality Data entry for facility operations

  • Assist Quality Manager with SQF needs

  • Works with management to ensure effective organizational design and that roles are correctly organized, defined, documented and communicated to all employees.

  • Ensures effective safety procedures, tools and record keeping are managed through site leadership.

  • Adheres to company GMP's (good manufacturing practices), safety procedures and all other quality processes.

  • Wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) when required.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Food Science or related field.


Two to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Manufacturing environment experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:

Candidate must possess a strong working knowledge of food manufacturing. Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing practices is beneficial. Outstanding verbal, written, multi-tasking and presentation skills. Ability to create momentum and foster organizational change. Must have a working knowledge of MS Word and MS PowerPoint software, and be proficient with MS Excel software. Experience with statistical process control and Oracle and is beneficial.

Travel Requirements:

Travel may be required to various SunOpta locations and for meetings or other job related functions.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

Approximately; 60% of work is performed in an office environment. 40% of work may involve being in the agricultural or manufacturing environment.

Perform shift specific tasks and work flow impacting the timely distribution of inbound/outbound product while meeting the day-to-day business needs of our stores. Typical Duties and Responsibilities * Coordinate the set-up and execution of labor needed to accomplish shift operations. Determine and assign job responsibilities based on employee's seniority and job qualifications while providing employees the ability to meet company productivity standards. Coordinate the reassignment of job responsibilities, scheduling of overtime hours, and address productivity issues as they arise. * Monitor the receiving and unloading process for inbound shipments. Provide assistance to ensure procedures are followed such as product is correct by count and item code; ensure checks for damage, infestation, shelf life and temperature are completed upon receipt. Review the labeling, putting away of product and documentation is completed accurately and in a timely manner. Communicate any issues. * Review the loading of product. Ensure loads consistently meet established guidelines such as delivery sequence, weight distribution on axle groups and product integrity. * Monitor the stacking of product and the order selecting process daily, identify and address issues affecting pallet height, product combinations, order breaks and ability to meet company productivity standards. Review staged outbound shipments for stability, labeling, etc. * Apply sound communication and motivational techniques in leading, coaching and developing employees. Requires consistency and follow-through of performance and employee related issues. Document substandard performance and communicate all issues to supervisor for corrective action. * Perform tours of the warehouse as needed; identify and address issues, be readily available to employees * Interpret and apply the terms of collective bargaining agreements, company working conditions and wage agreements and company personnel policies as the established guidelines to be adhered to and followed by all employees and appropriately apply to the daily operation of the warehouse. * Assist with the administration of records and reports regarding warehouse activities are prepared on a timely basis and effectively maintained. Calculate and input operational data such as labor hours and job codes to summarize productivity and payroll. * Provide support to ensure compliance of safety standards are maintained and adhered to consistently. Assist with keeping warehouse neat and well organized; apply company safety policies such as "clean as you go". Report and/or address potential safety hazards quickly. Possess an understanding of ammonia and fire systems; assist with coordination of emergency evacuations. * Investigate all reported employee injuries and reported collisions or incidents as needed; identify causes and determine preventative measures that could be taken, communicate findings to supervisor. * Perform other duties as needed. Requirements Education: * High school diploma or equivalent.
