Summary:

The Purchasing Manager will direct the efforts of buyers to achieve company goals. The Purchasing Manager has overall responsibility for managing inventory levels, improving service levels, achieving gross margin goals, increasing fill rates and minimizing shrink. Will work closely with buyers, sales, and management to identify opportunities to increase margin. Responsible for increasing market share by effectively executing in the areas above along with ensuring we procure the highest quality product at the lowest possible cost.

Basic Requirements:

  • Must be 21+ years of age.

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

  • Able to read, write and communicate in English as it relates to the job and safety regulations.

  • Valid Driver's License with Motor Vehicle Report within company standards.

  • Three (1) years purchasing produce experience.

  • One (1) year experience supervising others.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree.

  • Three (1) years food service produce purchasing.

  • Three (3) years intensive produce knowledge, including seasonal changes.

  • One (1) year experience in a sales related position.

  • Proven experience leading others in a supervisor or management role.

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  • Develop and implement metrics to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the department.

  • Understand market fluctuations and trends to ensure we lead the industry with product when it is first available.

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively over the phone and e-mail, good negotiating and interpersonal skills, and ability to multitask effectively.

  • Working knowledge of general operating procedures in warehouse and distribution environment.

  • Proven ability to interact with all levels of management, and communicate effectively in a positive manner, follow through on directions, and organize effectively to satisfy the customer's needs.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; AS400 a plus.

  • Proven ability to effectively plan and organize work activities independent of direct supervision.

Essential Duties:

  • Monitor performance of buyers to ensure that they are meeting company goals.

  • Facilitate an atmosphere of great communication between Buyers, Salespeople, and Operations employees.

  • Manage the roll out process of new business acquired as it pertains to purchasing including but not limited to creating new items and forecasting usages. Offer various pricing structures and models to help facilitate new customer acquisition.

  • Review physical inventory daily, focusing on quality and quantity.

  • Review market reports daily and advise appropriate people of trends and quality conditions.

  • Coordinate all local pickups with the Transportation department and purchasing department.

  • Manage all facets of freight and related expense including local pick-ups, back hauls, west coast mixers, Denver trucks, straight loads and LTL.

  • Ensure that proper margin levels are achieved in compliance with Corporate Multi Unit contracts.

  • Maintain records on spoilage analysis and out of stocks by buyer weekly, effectively improve these metrics.

  • Review purchase orders due in and compare with FreshPoint contracts to ensure the correct pricing is applied.

  • Review the PFC website and market price sheets daily to ensure receipt of all applicable "bill downs".

  • Review margin from previous week to identify other areas of opportunity for improvement. Also review daily reports to adjust or catch any mistakes with pricing or invoicing.

  • Review the order edit report daily to identify "shorts" and reasonably resolve.

  • Adjust orders in inventory based upon passing documentation.

  • Enter costs in the computer for pricing.

  • Ensure all purchases are made from appropriate GAP approved vendors.

  • Manage relationships with vendors to ensure our orders are the first filled and the last to be cut in tight markets.

  • Recommend and develop new product lines in conjunction with sales.

  • Identify new vendors, establish relationships, and develop future opportunities.

  • Conduct annual employee reviews.

  • Accept new responsibilities as directed by upper management (may consist of short term projects, or long term assignments).

  • Maintain the COI / HHA portion with our Safety Manager for all food vendors (current and new) to ensure we are buying from approved vendors and communicate with non-compliant vendors to achieve compliant status.

Physical Requirements:

Work is typically performed indoors in a climate controlled office environment at a desk or table requiring sitting, standing and stooping. The employee is regularly required to taste or smell, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. The employee is regularly exposed to congested and high traffic warehouse areas and moving mechanical parts and vehicles, including but not limited to forklifts, single pallet jacks, and hand carts. While making multiple trips to the cooler daily to inspect product, the employee is periodically exposed to varying climates with temperatures ranging from zero to one hundred five degrees Fahrenheit. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
