Job Description

Job Summary

With minimum supervision, buys materials in synchronization with customer requirements. Procures and monitors the flow of materials from the receipt of demand through the receipt of goods. Works with the planners, quality and program management to ensure customer requirements, production schedules and milestones are met.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Procures materials based on MRP requirements.

  • Reviews and releases purchase orders to Suppliers per the Approval Matrix.

  • Reschedules open Purchase orders to support changes in MRP demand. Coordinates with depts.

  • Reviews Planner Workbench, Exceptions Messages, Past Due PO and reports changes to the planners.

  • Review shortages and follows up with the Suppliers.

  • Proactively communicates foreseeable issues to next level Supervisor, planners and/or program management.

  • Investigates and resolves issues related to material shortages.

  • Ability to analyze data and generate reports. Solid understanding of accountancy variances cost drivers. Knowledge of ERP application & systems is required.

  • Maintains factors for MRP including but not limited to: Planner Codes, Item Cost, lead-time, order multipliers and minimum order quantity.

  • Participates in Clear to Build action boards (CTB) and assists with finding and implementing solutions.

  • Actively participates in continuous improvement teams/events related to purchasing and planning.

  • General understanding and ability to utilize continuous improvement tools and techniques such as but not limited to: kanban, kaizen, one-piece flow, value stream mapping, integrated product teams, theory of constraints, 6S, RCCA, Lean, and inventory reduction.

  • Coordinates changes in demand to the planners and program managers.

  • Reviews demand and makes limited decisions based on the data. Elevates recommendations for changes and improvements to the Purchasing Supervisor or Manager.

  • Coordinates with manufacturing, planning, quality, engineering, sales, and other support teams to alleviate constraints to on-time delivery.

  • Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Assists with training and development of level 1 Buyers.

Position Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. These duties and responsibilities are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Excellent computer skills, ability to work with and communicate with all Microsoft tools, including our MRP / ERP system.

Ability to make MRP/ERP changes and properly understand changes made as well as understanding the impact of decisions made on the companies schedule.

Communicate with suppliers' our demand and follow up to ensure schedules are met.

Must communicate with supplier's SOTD and quality performance.

  • Fluency and proficiency in the practical application of MRP logic, order policies, bills of material, routing, kanban material flow, capacity planning, customer required inventory replenishment systems, and other manufacturing strategies.

  • General understanding and ability to read blueprints.

  • Must be a team player with sound judgment and analytical skills

  • Intermediate to advanced level of proficiency in Microsoft Office software and manufacturing MRP/ERP planning systems

  • Good organizational skills.

  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills.

  • Read, write and understand the English language.

  • Strong ability to communicate effectively with all internal and external customers/suppliers as well as handle multiple priorities in a fast paced environment

  • Must be able to work assigned schedule with minimal absences

Education/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • AA degree or equivalent. BA/BS degree in business or technical field preferred.

  • Minimum 2-5 years planning or related experience. Preferably in a manufacturing environment.

  • Knowledge and understanding of MRP/ERP systems.

  • APICS coursework desired. APICS Certified (CPIM or CSCP) a plus

  • Additional years of related experience will be considered in lieu of education.

Required Skills

  • Previous supervisory experience is preferred

  • Proficient with Lean Manufacturing work area practices including 5-S, Visual Controls, Standard Work, work center metrics, and continuous improvement processes and able to instruct others in these practices

  • Strong leadership skills at all levels, good work ethic. Ability to professionally communicate and direct the work of others

  • Basic English language skills and ability to read, follow, and interpret work instructions

  • Willingness to learn and develop and/or train others

  • Typing and Microsoft Excel skills

  • Ability to focus and multi-task

  • Able to stand and walk over 50% of the time
