Under occasional supervision, performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the City's sewer pumping station facilities' equipment and grounds. Work involves monitoring performance of pumps at City sewer pumping and vacuum stations and performing preventative and corrective maintenance. Employee is also responsible for responding to emergency calls in cases of sewer stoppage or pump failure. Employee must exercise initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Employees must also exercise tact, courtesy, and firmness in supervising subordinates and in contact with customers and the general public. Reports to Labor Supervisor.

  • Monitors performance and maintains data pertaining to the performance of pumps at City sewer pumping stations, performing preventative maintenance such as lubricating and adjusting equipment as scheduled; inspects operating parts of the pump station; maintains records of inspections and maintenance activities.

  • Repairs pumps, valves, fittings, motors and other electrical and mechanical equipment, as necessary; inspects, adjusts and/or replaces units and parts, as necessary; rebuilds controllers to vacuum system.

  • Tests and inspects for hazardous gases; loads and disposes of waste.

  • Responds to after-hours calls to alleviate sewage and overflows, pump failures, low vacuum, etc.

  • Performs maintenance on sewer pumping station equipment and facilities; installs and activates valves on air vacuum systems; primes pumps; replaces electrical floats, checks control panels; and operates emergency pumps and generators.

  • Handles and transports waste.

  • Assists other divisions in maintenance and repairs.

  • May serve as lead worker in absence of a supervisor to ensure other workers use proper work methods.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Graduation from high school and one to two years of experience in mechanical maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.  Requires a valid  Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B or ability to obtain one within six months of employment.

  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

  • Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors.

  • Ability to read a variety of work orders, correspondence, service records, etc.

  • Ability to prepare work orders, maintenance reports, records, and forms using prescribed format.

  • Ability to apply principles of rational systems as applied to mechanics to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization generally exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.

  • Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English and mechanical terminology.

  • Ability to add and subtract totals and to multiply and divide.

  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under high levels of stress in emergency situations.

  • Knowledge of the plumbing, electrical, and mechanical trades as applicable to sewer pumping systems.

  • Knowledge of the standard practices, tools, materials and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of mechanical pumps and motors.

  • Skill in the use and care of various hand and power tools, and understands the safety hazards and applicable precautions involved with such work.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain simple records.

  • Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods of time, possibly under hazardous conditions.

  • Ability to maintain readiness to work on a 24-hour, call-in basis.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
