Job Description

ICF seeks a Publications Manager and Lead Editor to work in our International Health and Development Line of Business, based in Rockville, MD. The division's Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Program assists countries worldwide in the collection, processing, and analysis of survey data used to monitor and evaluate population, health, and nutrition programs. Work is performed on a contractual basis for USAID. These surveys and the resulting publications document global trends and improvements in health care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as editor-in-chief for The DHS Program's publications

  • In collaboration with senior staff, develop and implement policies and strategies to guide and manage the brand, style and production of the project's print publications.

  • Supervise and mentor Design & Publications specialists.

  • With the support of the Design and Publications Specialists, manage production and editing of up to 60-80 publications annually including DHS's final reports and analytical reports. The successful candidate will:

  • Develop editorial calendars and conduct planning meetings.

  • Establish and manage deadlines.

  • Edit and write technical copy.

  • Assign formatting, editing, and design work as needed.

  • Oversee print production including print contracts and budgets.

  • Update and maintain project Style Guide and style sheets for individual publications based on Chicago Manual (17th edition)

  • Coordinate DHS's consulting editors and publications specialists including management of subcontracts, scopes of work, and day-to-day assignments

  • Provide editing support for other products including web content, eLearning course materials, and other project deliverables

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Global Health, or Demography, or related field, or equivalent experience required.

  • Minimum of 8 years related experience in technical editing required; experience editing in public health, statistical, or other technical or health care fields.

  • Demonstrated experience managing staff, contractors, and vendors.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent editor, well-versed in Chicago style.

  • Ability to work as a collaborative team member and to work independently to produce quality materials within tight timeframes.

  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment, with colleagues from different backgrounds and cultures, and with content written by non-native English speakers.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint) required; a plus; experience working in PC environment required.

  • Experience managing the print production process (i.e. file setup, project bidding) required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite software (Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) and/or SharePoint

  • Experience working for a US Government and/or USAID-contract preferred.

  • Foreign language: Ability to read, write, and speak in French, Spanish, Portuguese, or Arabic

This 8-9 month consultancy will lead a portfolio of Tableau visualization and analysis and provide strategic leadership to increase data availability to global and developing country audiences. Consultants must possess creative and adaptive thinking skills, be resourceful, and have a passion for conveying complex analytic findings through elegant reports and Tableau dashboards. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with staff across The DHS Program to clearly communicate survey findings through Tableau data visualizations, interactive charts, graphs, and more to diverse audiences. Key Responsibilities and Deliverables: * Design and develop data visualization products (dashboards and reports) in Tableau using DHS Program datasets and the Application Programming Interface (API) to transform data into actionable insights for digital dissemination * Develop Tableau data visualization guidance and establish standards and best practices * Develop recommendations for Tableau strategies beyond scope of consultancy * Build and publish at least one interactive Tableau dashboard using DHS data * Build Tableau dashboard templates for internal use Basic Qualifications: * Master's degree or higher in public health, demography, data visualization, statistics, or a related social or computer science field with a strong understanding of research, data analysis, and data management * 5+ years of experience in research, monitoring, evaluation or analytics related to global or US public health or a related field * Demonstrated experience working with Tableau Desktop and Server and skilled in creating Tableau workbooks, dashboards, and stories (Tableau Certification is preferred) * Demonstrated experience producing dynamic visualization and presentation of data * Experience with statistical analysis of complex datasets * English fluency required Preferred Skills/Experience: * Familiarity with DHS datasets and/or The DHS Program's Application Programming Interface (API) * Experience with global datasets related to issues covered by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) * Experience starting and building a project's Tableau portfolio Period of Performance: Consultancy is available through October 1, 2020. Location: Consultant must be in the Washington DC metro area and able to work in the ICF Rockville, MD office at least one day a week, plus be available for meetings, as necessary.
