The purpose of the class is to review bridge inspection reports and construction plans, assign, oversee, work of the bridge maintenance team. The class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Requirements
High school graduation or successful completion of GED
Five (5) years of full-time equivalent experience in the maintenance and construction of bridges.
Three (3) years of supervisory experience.
A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
The following bullets outline certifications that are preferred upon hire, but required within the first two years of employment, in order of priority. For clarity within this class specification, all the VDOT certifications will be considered "one." If a candidate already possesses the requirements of one or more at the time of hire, the candidate will be expected to obtain at least one of the remaining requirements within the first year. Any remaining certifications should be obtained within two years of hire.
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Material Certifications in Asphalt I & II, Soils and Aggregate Compaction, Pavement Markings, Slurry Seal, Guard Rails and Intermediate Traffic Control Certification.
ACI (American Concrete Institute) certification in concrete.
Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Stormwater Inspection Certification.
Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection Certification.
Must possess a Class A CDL with a tanker endorsement (N) within 180 days of employment.
Must possess a valid driver's license and have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
This is a safety sensitive position that requires successful completion of testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City of Hampton's substance abuse policy.
Additional Requirements
Requires some duties to be performed outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
The position requires shift work to include nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency standby.
The incumbent will be considered "essential personnel" during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
