About the Position
Classes in this series perform a wide variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled work in all phases of maintenance, repair and construction of roads, flood control, and other County public works facilities; and do other related work as required. Public Works Worker is part of a career series; however, the department will be hiring at the I and II level. This position will be assigned to the San Luis Obispo and North County (eg. Atascadero/Templeton/Paso Robles) area.

Effective July 1, 2024, the compensation for this position will increase by 2.50%. This is a bargained across the board increase for this job classification.
Note: This recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, substitute, limited term, and temporary positions, both full-time and part-time.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of tools and materials commonly used in road, flood control, and other public works maintenance work, as well as operation of gasoline/diesel-powered equipment.
In addition, candidates must possess the ability to:
Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance
Perform with mechanical aptitude
Complete work relating to the maintenance, repair, and construction of roads, including tree and traffic facilities, bridges, flood control and other public works facilities
Perform heavy and manual labor
Follow oral and written directions
Keep simple records
Work cooperatively with others
Learn to perform duties of higher level positions
Minimum Qualifications
A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:
Public Works Worker I (Trainee):No additional experience.Public Works Worker II:Equivalent to one year of experience at the Public Works Worker I (Trainee) level.
Licenses and Certificates
Public Works Worker I (Trainee): A valid driver's license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
Public Works Worker IIthroughPublic Works Leadworker:A valid driver'slicense is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA Class A driver'slicense is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
