The Public Works Division Engineer is responsible for the overall management of a major division.
Incumbents plan, direct and manage the work of the division and represent the Public Works and Planning Department management in working with boards, commissions, other departments and agencies, architectural engineering consultants, contractors and the public.
The current vacancy exists in the Road Maintenance and Operations Division . This division is responsible for preserving the existing public road system as a safe and efficient guideway for servicing private vehicles, public transit, and commercial vehicles.
Preservation is accomplished through road investigations for violations of ordinances and statutes, permits for controlling quality of work within the road rights of way, inspecting and construction by private developers of new roads offered as public roads, and through performing general and specific maintenance functions to existing roadways which includes signing and striping of County maintained roads.
Experience in Road Maintenance engineering is preferred . Note:
The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions.
Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.
Positions in this classification are in Medical Group II - Moderate Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require moderate physical effort using arms, legs, back, and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing or pulling of objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) 10-25 pounds, and occasionally over 25 pounds.
Generally, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved.
Eligible candidates must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Under direction, incumbents perform technical and professional engineering work involving design, investigation, development and construction of public and private structures. Considerable judgment, latitude and initiative are expected in order to complete projects. Incumbents may supervise, coordinate, and evaluate the work performed by lower level staff. The ideal candidates must be highly motivated, responsive, possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and have experience managing multiple capital improvement projects and tasks. Professional Engineer positions are utilized in various City departments; therefore, the eligible list established from this recruitment may be utilized to fill current and future vacancies which may be in Public Works, Public Utilities or the Department of Resource Management. The current openings are in the Department of Development and Resource Management and the Department of Public Works. DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS, PROJECT MANAGEMENT DIVISION The Professional Engineer need in the Public Works Project Management Division will be responsible for the design, management, construction, and consultant oversight for City CIP projects. The candidate must possess knowledge of Federal Funding programs such as Federal Highway Administration and Measure C funding programs through Cal Trans. (Civil Engineer or Traffic Engineer only) DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENT AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT The Building and Safety Services Division of the Development and Resource Management Department is seeking a Professional Engineer for commercial plan check operations. The position will be responsible for reviewing plans and structural calculations for the design of complex commercial and residential buildings and structures in accordance with State and Local building code requirements. The ideal candidate shall possess a strong background and experience in structural engineering principles and design concepts. (only Civil Engineer or Structural Engineer Licenses).
