The Town of Chapel Hill Public Works Department is seeking a graduate-level student or recent graduate to assist department administration with analysis, research, and special projects for the Public Works Department. This opportunity would be ideal for a graduate-level student or recent graduate interested in local government management. This professional work experience position will work closely with a team including two analysts and the department's operations manager.

We are looking for someone for at least 12-15 hours a week and available to begin working with us as soon as possible. The number of hours per week and schedule is flexible depending on the individual's needs and the needs of the department.

Essential Functions: Some of the projects will include:

  • Provide analysis and support for the department's annual budget process

  • Lead performance management project, including improving data tracking and developing regular reporting systems

  • Provide analysis and support to the department's succession planning

Other special projects and shadowing opportunities depending upon the individual's interest

Minimum Qualifications:
Seeking a student or recent graduate with a background in Public Administration, Business Management, Information Sciences, or a related field, with an interest in the following areas:

  • Data management

  • Analysis

  • Human resources

  • Communications

To be considered for this professional work experience position, candidates must:

  • Be enrolled in or recently graduated from a graduate program from an accredited college or university

  • Be highly organized with attention to detail

  • Have strong interpersonal awareness and communication skills

Work involves developing and maintaining productive collaborative working relationships with researchers, scholars, and other affiliated groups and individuals. This position interprets and applies university/program policies and practices and performs associated administrative and business functions including providing administrative support to the executive director. Program areas of assignment will include program/facilities coordination and administration, scheduling, and managing the bimonthly colloquia, biennial symposia, and other workshops or meetings for program engagement. This position serves as the point of contact for the Center, will plan and coordinate day-to-day activities, problem-solve process and procedural issues, and, at times, serve as a program assistant. This position is contingent on CITAP funds. The current funding for the program totals $9.85 million across 6 years. *60% Center Support and Management - Plan major public-facing events for the Center. Includes Bi-Monthly academic conference/seminar and Biennial Symposium. - Serve as the process and procedural expert observing funding/budgetary guidelines for related expenses against the appropriate University policy. Process invoices, travel, etc. for CITAP operations. - Collaborate with SILS Development team for potential funding opportunities. While this position will not actively solicit funding, they need to be cognizant of opportunities presented or implied by Center visitors, phone conversations, email communications, etc. Such information would be conveyed to the ED for follow up. Distinguish the difference between gifts and grants. - Liaise publication projects with Communications Coordinator. Provide information to Communications Coordinator both proactively and reactively to promote the Center. This position must stay informed of SILS and CITAP activities and events, including those offered by CITAP and those in which the Center is a partner/participant. Develop listservs and send out information as requested. - Coordinate internal relationships with Grants Team, Executive Assistant, and HR Officer in support of the Center - Serves as the main CITAP contact, respond to day-to-day needs of the Center, and problem-solve process and procedural issues. Work will involve the local and remote coordination of on- and off-campus activities. *35% Executive Support - Provide administrative and executive support to the Executive Director of the Center. - Schedule meetings with CITAP partners - Take and disseminate minutes from meetings as requested - Direct internal and external questions to appropriate subject matter expert *5% - Other Duties as Assigned Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
