Job Description

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for a Public Service Intern 1, Information Technology [R0145097].

ROLE of the POSITION

The primary responsibilities of this role include assisting with installation, configuration, maintenance, and documentation of the campus data network systems, both hardware, and software. This position will also assist with the management of the copper and fiber cable plant as well as power and battery backup for network systems, and will assist in the development of software tools for network automation.

The Essential Functions of the position include:

  • Assist with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of network equipment and systems (routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points), UPS systems and cable plant per established work instructions, processes, and standards.

  • Assist with the operation of campus-wide network services such as DNS, DHCP, NTP, RADIUS. Assist with port activation and provide basic troubleshooting of network systems. Develop scripts and applications for automation and enhancement of network operations.

  • Assist with the documentation of the network infrastructure and configuration. Documentation includes but is not limited to network drawings, network installation and changes, statistics, equipment inventory, and structured cable plant.

  • Provide excellent services by listening to customers and understanding their needs; help customers solve problems; maintain a professional disposition; be approachable, respectful, and team-orient3ed; take ownership of assignments; provide updates to customers and be familiar with the basic operations of the university.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or the equivalent and enrollment and continued successful performance in an academic program related to the field of employment (Information Technology) at an accredited college or university.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of data networking including the configuration of network equipment and knowledge of the IP stack

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to plan and prioritize multiple tasks

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

INFORMATIONAL NOTES

  • Employment is not to exceed six months from the date of graduation.
  • Employment in this class will not lead to permanent status in State service

SALARY

Grade 27 Step 1, salary $ 46,207.44 USD Annual (Prorated to $34,655.58 to reflect 30-hour work weeks). "Step" means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
