Job Description:

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, provides

protection to hospital, patients, visitors, employees, and their property.

Scope

1.Promotes mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abides by service behavior standards.

2.Presents a visible security presence to prevent the appearance of criminal opportunity. Performs patrols of assigned area; maintains awareness of environment and observes potential security risks, takes appropriate action to prevent or suppress activity contrary to hospital rules and regulations which is criminal and/or which poses a safety hazard to persons and/or property.

3.Assists patients, guest, and staff by providing general information. Provides access control by checking badges and passes and identification of persons entering the hospital to prevent entry of unauthorized persons into business and patient care areas. Checks packages being brought into or removed from hospital building and grounds.

4.Performs public service duties as needed (i.e., escorts patients, guests, or employees; assists persons locked out of vehicles or rooms; opens or locks doors; provides battery boosts). Assists with restraints and lifting of patients as needed.

5.Investigates complaints regarding parking, safety, and security matters, disorderly or suspicious persons, etc. Prepares reports documenting all significant events and investigations, crimes committed, safety hazards, repair requests, and the like.

6.Actively patrols parking lots and garages to maintain security on foot or by vehicle. Ensures compliance with parking regulations and observes hazardous conditions when present. Directs traffic on hospital premises as required.

7.Monitors security and fire equipment, such as alarms, surveillance video, and the like.

8.Acts as a system administrator for the facility access control system adding, changing, or removing access as needed. Initiating lock down procedures when required.

9.Answer telephones and provides information to public and hospital staff as needed.



  1. Engages in opportunities for additional education and training in criminal law, first aid, defensive tactics, and other topics relevant to security.

  2. Assess and clear hospital rooms from hazards for patients who may have suicidal or behavioral concerns.

  3. Assists in the intake and the release of bodies from morgue.

  4. Maintain lost and found property and valuables registry within the hospital.

  5. Responds to Emergency Codes in accordance with Hospital and/or Security Department policies. Acts as hospital liaison with local law enforcement and other emergency personnel.

  6. Escorts law enforcement, social work professionals, and other city/state officials to the appropriate room or location.

  7. Perform interior and exterior door rounds assessing for vulnerabilities or safety concerns.

  8. Perform roof clearance assessment prior to helicopter arrival.

  9. Maintain knowledge of safety and emergency preparedness plans and response.

  10. May be required to float to other departments (within scope of competency and qualifications) based on business need.

  11. May be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled shift.

  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Valid Driver's License in the state of practice (or ability to obtain DL within 3 months of hire), proof of insurability

  • Current Unarmed Security Officers License

  • Current BLS certification

  • Current TASER, handcuffing, and Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) gel certification

  • Current Basic Security Officer certification through the IAHSS

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, security administration or related area with participation in security or law enforcement through an internship or volunteer work such as police reserve program

  • IAHSS Advanced or Supervisor certification

  • Experience in security and/or public law enforcement or military police.

  • Verbal and written communication skills to compose complete, coherent, and concise reports of events and investigations.

  • Academic ability to meet state certification requirements set by the Montana Board of Private Security to obtain Montana Security License.

  • Analytical and observational ability to recognize suspicious behavior, criminal activity, and potential safety hazards.

  • Interpersonal skills, self-confidence, and physical conditioning necessary to confront and control potentially hostile persons with minimum risks of personal injury or disruption to hospital operation. • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically within a multi-functional team.

  • Ability to deal with conflict that may involve physical contact or self-defense equipment.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Understanding of basic computer programs including Word, Excel, and Power Point.

  • Regular attendance to perform work on site during regularly scheduled business hours or scheduled shifts is required

  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends is required for identified positions

  • Ability to successful function in a fast paced, service-oriented environment.
