Purpose: Monitor and maintain the college security program with an emphasis on observing, reporting, and acting in accordance with established procedures.

Classification:  Physical Plant, Non-Exempt/Bargaining Unit

Level:  I

Reports To: Director of Public Safety/Coordinator of Public Safety

Principal Working Relationships: Director of Public Safety, Public Safety Officers, Students, Faculty and Staff

Major Responsibilities

  • Patrol campus buildings including taking boiler readings, monitor traffic and parking lots, prepare accurate/timely incident and accident reports, and respond to emergency calls via cell phone, or portable radio.

  • Respond to emergency calls and Participate in all emergency response protocols, and serve as communication link to emergency response personnel.

  • Being alert and sensitive to emergency call situations.  This requires an appropriate and immediate response to calls either coming in through emergency telephone system or directly through the switchboard.

  • Monitoring of the closed circuit television monitors at all district locations.

  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of college's emergency response protocols and how to operate emergency phone system, including internal/external call boxes, and operation of the emergency public address system.

  • Escort service to vehicles if requested.

  • Provide detailed written reports of work shift activities.

  • Schedule/coordinate the use of the College's pool vehicles.

  • Service school vans (i.e. fuel vehicles, record mileage, check tires, clean windows, pick-up trash, etc.) and maintenance on security vehicles.

  • Operate college switchboard in accordance with switchboard procedures as outlined in the procedure manual.

  • Respond to phone communications from Public Safety Supervision when unexpected security needs arise.

  • Public Safety Employees are required to report to work during periods when the campus has been closed for business and/or classes. It should be understood, Public Safety Employees may be required to remain on duty, until properly relieved of such duties.

  • Locking of doors when facility is closed.

  • Opening up facility.

  • Opening up for special events.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Assists With

  • Maintenance problems, snow removal, and shipping/receiving as needed.

  • The movement of equipment and furniture as needed and the setup of the facility for special function.

  • Compliance with the Campus Security Act.

  • Assist with the monitoring of Metasys for external door security and fire alarm system. Report system failures to the Director of Public Safety or the Coordinator of public safety.

  • Maintaining an effective key control program and the preparation of related management reports.

  • Complying with Order of Protection decrees from state and local agencies.

  • Assist with departmental assessment and establishment of key performance indicators based on the strategic plan.

Risk Management and Loss Prevention Activities

  • Actively participate in and carry out activities in support of the college's Risk Management Program in a capacity appropriate to this position.

  • Monitor conditions, events, and circumstances present in the college operation to avoid potential torts or injuries to students, staff, or the general public, then communicate observations to the appropriate supervisor and/or Risk Management Committee.

  •  Maintain a working knowledge of the college's emergency procedures and how to operate emergency phone systems; including internal/external call boxes.

Minimum Necessary Skills, Experience, and Educational Background

  • High School diploma or GED required.

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Two years security experience preferred.

  • Working knowledge of computer systems and software, to include word processing, and spreadsheets.

  • Good communication skills, both in person and over the phone.

Physical Requirements to Perform Job Functions

  • Capable of lifting 30 pounds and performs arduous work.

  • Capable of continuous walking and climbing stairs throughout the campus.

  • Subject to outside environmental conditions.

  • Vision - with/without correction.

  • Hearing - perceiving the nature of sound with/without correction.

  • Sitting for sustained periods of time.
