The Public Safety Mobile Technician II is an intermediate level paraprofessional located in the Department of Innovation and Technology that supports or assists other Department of Innovation and Technology and City personnel who design, operate, and use automatic data processing systems applications and products. As a Public Safety Mobile Technician II, the supervisor, higher-grade Information Technology Technicians, higher-grade information technology professionals or other designated employee may provide standing instructions on recurring assignments by indicating what is to be done, applicable policies and procedures to follow, quality and quantity of work expected, deadlines, and priority of assignments. In general, Information Technology Technicians perform four major functions:

install and maintain hardware and software systems; maintain and repair equipment; set-up computer security measures; and troubleshoot and offer technical support.

Examples of Duties:

  • Assists with oversight of the daily performance of computer systems

  • Operates a variety of standard office equipment such as a PC, printer, telephone, facsimile machine (fax), and copier to monitor systems and prepare documentation

  • Performs other computer system support such as data entry and verification, assembly and preparation of computer programs for processing, and the review of output for accuracy and completeness

  • Enters commands and observes system functioning to verify correct operations and detect errors

  • Understands and utilizes cloud computing and storage solutions to provide users and with various capabilities to store and process their data in third-party data centers

  • Reviews property ownership data, including deeds, tax rolls, etc.

  • Sets up equipment for employee use, performs or ensures proper installation of cables, operating systems, or appropriate software

  • Installs and performs repairs to hardware, software, or peripheral equipment, following design or installation specifications

  • Maintains records of daily data communication transactions, problems and remedial actions taken, or installation activities

  • Performs backup/recovery procedures on a daily basis

  • Orders and inventories spare parts, including stripping surplus equipment for usable parts

  • Confers with management and users, including Public Safety personnel, to assist in identifying trends and performing root cause analysis for systems problems

  • Performs communications server administration such as establishing user and voicemail accounts, setting passwords, backups, and assigning access levels

  • Trains users to use new or modified equipment

  • Performs ongoing hardware and software maintenance operations, including installing or upgrading hardware or software

  • May be required to perform duties or provide support beyond normal work days for projects and supported system maintenance requirements

  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Broad knowledge of Information Technology principles and methods sufficient to work independently using conventional procedures and practices to do intermediate level work such as:

  • Standardized data processing rules, operations, and procedures enabling employees to resolve common or recurring problems or to perform standardized variations in work methods

  • System control language that provides for devising run control streams according to general instructions and review of product specifications

  • Languages and equipment in conducting system record searches to identify and/or resolve procedural errors, as well as programming language

  • System hardware, software, and program capabilities and limitations for multi-programming systems operating in more than two partitions

  • Terminology, codes, abbreviations, and graphics for preparing systems documentation or programs

  • Program data contents, standardized jobs within programs, and methods for defining and retrieving non-standard data and reports

  • Circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming

  • Information systems/network security methods, including plan network implementation, system security, training, network administration, systems analysis, and emergency control center, for ensuring, protecting and resolving the security of information systems and network services

  • A body of standardized regulations, requirements, procedures, and operations associated with clerical and technical duties related to business information technology systems administration

  • Personal computer capabilities, the application of computer systems, and methods and techniques used to operate peripheral equipment and technology application in the cloud environment

  • Property ownership data, including deeds, tax rolls, etc.

  • Accounting principles and practices used in managing property sales

  • The City of Detroit's intranet site for source data on parcels, developed using .NET (ASP.Net and C#) with SQL Server as the backend database

  • Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction

  • Windows computer imaging and troubleshooting and network configuration and troubleshooting (wireless and wired)

  • Symantec and other virus protection solutions

  • Structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
