Description: This is structure and craft work in the preventive maintenance and repair of various types of light duty vehicles including vehicles performing public safety and other emergency services. Work includes diagnosing mechanical and electrical repairs to these vehicle types including all related hardware and software malfunctions. Work is performed under limited supervision.

Representative Tasks: (A position may not be assigned all the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all the duties that may be assigned).

  • Services, overhauls, and repairs a variety of automotive and law enforcement vehicles and equipment for a large fleet in order to maintain vehicles and equipment in a safe, operable condition and maximize availability.

  • Calibrates and installs automotive, radar, audio video, radio, and related electronic equipment in order to maintain equipment in proper operating condition.

  • Diagnose and repair police communication equipment in order to maintain mobile data terminals, printers, adapters, and modems.

  • Operates wreckers and ramp trucks in order to recover vehicles containing evidence for criminal investigations.

  • Operates oxyacetylene, plasma cutter, metal pro devises and electric welding in order to repair, design, and fabricate equipment.

  • Installs, repairs and adjusts emergency lights and sirens, alternators, throttle body (TBI), sequential fuel injection (SFI), fuel delivery and electrical systems in order to ensure safe, efficient operation of fleet vehicles and related emergency equipment.

  • Diagnose, reprogram and repair components of electronic and mechanical instruments using the latest computer software in order to maintain fully equipped and operable vehicles.

  • Writes repair orders for each vehicle serviced, listing all parts, labor, description of work done, and vehicle information in order to establish and document vehicle and equipment history.

  • Diagnoses, repairs and rebuilds vehicle engines, transmissions and other drive train components in order to maintain a safe and dependable fleet of vehicles.

  • Road test vehicles in order to ensure the correct diagnosis, repair and proper function of the vehicles engine, transmission and other emergency equipment.

Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities Required: (These are required to successfully perform the work assigned)

  • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair.

  • Knowledge of hydraulic /electric (ABS) and air brake system operation and repair.

  • Knowledge of hydraulic pumps, motors, and system operation and repair.

  • Knowledge of steering and suspension system parts, maintenance, and repair.

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools of the automotive mechanic trade.

  • Knowledge of computerized diagnostic systems.

  • Knowledge of emergency software, computer and laptop systems.

  • Knowledge of computer networking procedures.

  • Knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations pertinent to operator and passenger safety and emergency equipment modification methods and techniques.

  • Knowledge of state inspection laws and regulations.

  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the mechanic's trade.

  • Knowledge of vehicle and equipment preventive maintenance procedures and schedules.

  • Knowledge of basic cutting and welding techniques.

  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic failures in vehicles and equipment.

  • Ability to repair a variety of mechanical and emergency vehicle equipment.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment.

  • Ability to work independently in the repair and maintenance of automotive and associated emergency equipment.

Minimum Qualifications: (Entry level knowledges, skills, and/or abilities may be acquired through, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO the following coursework/training and/or experience).

  • Four (4) years experience and/or education in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of vehicles.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience repairing hybrid, plug in electric (PHEV) or fully electric (BEV) vehicles.

Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class).

Possession of a valid Class C motor vehicle license as issued by the State of Maine.
