Role Summary

The Public Relations Specialist will work in partnership with the Communications Manager to develop and implement strong strategic external communications, working collaboratively with the Communications team. The specialist will support the development and promotion of a positive image of the Volkswagen Chattanooga factory to the public and press in order to enhance perceptions in Chattanooga, across Tennessee and in N. Georgia as appropriate. The Specialist will collaborate and assist with internal communications initiatives.

Role Responsibilities

  • To work with the Communications Manager to plan and implement external communications activities to advance the plant's communication goals and meet the strategic objectives.

  • To develop and maintain a communications schedule for continuous engagement and media/editorial content.

  • To track relevant policy and media developments to help inform the Communications team and internal stakeholders.

  • To establish networks and communication channels internally and externally, identifying to ensure coordinated communications efforts.

  • To identify opportunities for partnership development and stakeholder outreach.

  • To manage the plant's social media accounts, draft engaging content and connect with audiences.

  • To manage and keep up-to-date the plant's digital media archive and press clips

  • To supply plant or product information and/or imagery to the media and partners as appropriate.

  • To initiate, plan and organize press conferences to the media, business and political stakeholders.

  • To draft external communications, including media advisories and releases, regarding the plant.

  • To serve as Company spokesperson when Communications Manager is not available.

  • To develop positive community relations for the plant as well as ideas for reputation and risk management.

  • To ensure all information published about the plant by third parties is accurate and up to date.

  • To support third parties in brand compliance.

  • To oversee the production and design of collateral materials (brochures, signage).

  • To oversee communications with charitable organizations re: the plant's giving program, and coordinate evaluation and execution with the Communication team

  • To coordinate events, including press conferences, working with budgets and in coordination with vendors.

Years of Relevant Experience

  • 3-5 years

Education-Required

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Public Affairs, Journalism or similar field

Skills

  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Ability to operate independently

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills on all levels

Specialized Skills-Required

  • Minimum of 3 years in Communications / Public Relations field

  • Ability to use analytics to improve decision-making

  • Strong communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and organizational skills

  • Excellent understanding of design standards including brand compliant typographic treatment, layout, packaging, visual balance, color usage, and user interfaces

  • Excellent time management and professional collaboration skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects with changing priorities to produce committed results with quality on schedule

  • Experience in special events coordination

  • A working-knowledge and understanding of AP Style

  • Proficiency with researching, authoring and re-purposing content for communication including email, storyboards, social media and web

  • Ability to deliver information in a clear, concise, and compelling manner to effectively engage others and achieve desired results

  • Working knowledge of platforms/software for email communication, social media, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs

  • Ability to identify opportunities for improvement and innovation, remove barriers and resistance, and enable desired behaviors

  • Ability to build relationships of trust by having a proactive point of view

Specialized Skills-Desired

  • Journalism or agency experience

  • Basic knowledge of design software such as Adobe Creative Suite is desirable

  • Familiarity with videography/photography and storyboard development; assisting with photo/film shoots

  • Previous experience in a manufacturing or regulated environment with active community engagement

The Public Services Specialist works the busiest service point in the Library. Regular responsibilities include: circulating materials and technologies, answering directional, policy, information, and technology questions, managing circulation accounts and student financial information, and providing room reservation assistance. The position serves as a building opener or closer on weekends and fulfills building management responsibilities on Saturdays and Sundays. The Desks and Patron Experience team provides access to materials, information, technologies, and work space in support of curricular and research needs. The department is staffed approximately 100 hours per week over seven days. * This is a 30-32 hour per week position, with benefits. * This position reports to work Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday during the academic semester. * Summer semester hours and duties may shift with collection duties taking a larger percentage of time. Responsibilities include: Public Services * Circulating Library materials and technologies including selection, location, explanation of policy, and inspections; * Answering directional, information, and technology questions in-person, online, and via telephone at the Check Out and Information Commons desks; * Fulfilling and adjusting, as necessary, Library room reservations and accommodating events held in the Library; * Accepting payment of fines and fees and balancing cash register; * Resolving patron conflicts or unusual service situations, adjusting fines and fees, loan periods, or other factors as the situation requires; * Creating and managing Library user accounts; * Opening or closing the Library on Saturdays and Sundays. Collections * Completing stacks maintenance projects including materials processing and inventorying, maintaining item records in Library systems, processing and inventorying gifts and donations, assisting with weeding and discarding materials; * Completing routine stack maintenance task including general upkeep of library materials and collections. Other Duties * Updating appropriate policy and procedural documentation when necessary; * Processing changes to administrative holds on patron accounts and maintaining corresponding financial records; preparing statistical, financial, and other reports; * Participating in Desks and Patron Experience planning processes, recommending changes to policies and procedures, new goals and reports, and other departmental business; * Contributing to Library-wide goals; * Planning, executing, and assessing individual goals as part of the annual goal and reviewing process; * Is available to shift from or otherwise work outside of regularly-scheduled hours. * Bachelor's degree required; however, prior work experience may serve as a proxy for education. Every two years of customer service experience will count as one year of post-secondary education. * Minimum one (1) year of work experience in a customer service environment is required. * Minimum one (1) year experience in a Library setting is preferred. * Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to interact professionally, congenially, and collaboratively with a variety of constituencies including: students, faculty, colleagues, vendors, etc. * Must have excellent computer and technology skills including Windows and Macintosh operating systems. * Excellent search skills including library databases and catalogs. * Must have exceptional communication skills including effective writing and speaking skills. * Must have proven ability to manage complicated patron borrowing, information questions, and financial situations. * Must have proven ability to provide great attention to detail, organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines. * Proven ability to multi-task, innovate, and think critically is required.
