Public Relations Assistant Manager

Summary:

The primary responsibility of the assistant manager position is to assist in the growth, development, and implementation of all phases of the Zoo's public relations programs. The position provides assistance to the public relations and marketing director in a variety of tasks as they relate to the promotion of the Zoo, its mission and the brand to various audiences including the media, community, board, and other constituencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary creator and scheduler of social media content (calendar, caption creation, scheduling and management of pages, DM communication)

  • Maintain knowledge of social media trends while adhering to brand standards

  • Write, edit, route, and distribute press materials

  • Serve as secondary media relations contact

  • Serve as an editor for Zoo internal publications and assistant editor of external publications

  • Assist in management of all media databases

  • Manage evaluation of print and broadcast coverage

  • Assist in the implementation of press deliverables, including dissemination of releases, advisories, Q&As and marketing collateral

  • Assist with coordination of all media previews for new exhibits, special events, etc.

  • Assist with the Zoo's television and radio appearances and all onsite publicity

  • Assist in coordinating and implementing media previews for new exhibits and special events

  • Assist with proofing and editing collateral and articles from other departments to ensure consistent and accurate Zoo messages

  • Book and coordinate all onsite filming and photography from outside vendors/organizations

  • Update Zoo phone line and search engine information

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Ability to prioritize effectively and learn systems quickly to utilize for research

  • Independent problem-solving skills

  • Detail-oriented with the ability to anticipate needs

  • Position has access to sensitive information that demands a level of confidentiality and maturity

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Publisher, as well as basic skills with PowerPoint

  • Valid driver license with acceptable motor vehicle record to maintain zoo standards of insurability

Education and/or Experience:

  • At least three years of experience and a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the field of communications, or related field required

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or or move up to 40 pounds. Some moving of tables, chairs, and boxes in preparation of special events will be required as well as hanging signs, using ladder, and driving motorized carts.
