Occupational Summary
The Public Programs Manager is the lead presenter of guest-facing programs in the museum. They use their exuberance to draw guests into engagement with collections items, live demonstrations, and interactive experiences. Their energy and enthusiasm super-charges museum events as they serve as lead Emcee, developing a relationship and familiarity with regular guests. This role participates in developing some programming and is responsible to deliver experiences and support museum floor function for outstanding guest experiences. Duties and Responsibilities
Engage with the public through museum programs such as:
Value-added programming (included with museum admission)
Ex: walk-ups, kitchen lessons, kitchen chemistry, science demos, and others
Public Programs/Events (in coordination with Specialists)
Lunar New Year, Chocolate Fest, Materials Science Day, and others
Produce and execute public events:
New Years at Noon; Red, White, and Blue Day; CDM's Birthday
Backup the following programs
STEM Tour shows and workshops
School Group tours
Programming for camps (such as science demos, etc.)
Participate as Ed Staff Manager on rotation schedule.
Supervise MAPs (teen volunteers) in the absence of the Director of Museum Experience & Volunteers, Volunteers Manager, and Museum Experience Manager.
Other duties as assigned.
Backup within the Education Department
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Required
At least 4 years of experience with children and adults in learning and/or entertainment environments (may be formal or informal)
Outgoing personality, natural performer, skilled at drawing people in and directing/moving groups of people. Ability to Emcee public programs.
Observable passion for learning, science/arts, and people and outstanding communication skills in all modalities
(preferred) experience coaching others for public presentations
(required) experience leading a team to produce tangible results
Ability to form a connection with guests of all backgrounds, abilities, and interests
Supervises
Museum Educators in the absence of Museum Experience Manager and Director of Museum Experience
Supports supervision of teen and adult volunteers in the absence of Volunteers Manager and Director of Museum Experience
May supervise staff in the execution of public programs
Work Environment
Office- must have strong computer skills in MS Outlook, and Office suite
Museum Floor- lifting and carrying materials up to 25 lbs, standing for extended periods, bending to level of children
Nights, Weekends, Holidays: Typical work week is Wednesday through Sunday (full time at 32-35 hours per week)
