Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen

The ToxicsCleanup Program (TCP)within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Public Outreach Specialist (Community Outreach & Environmental Education Specialist 3) position. This position is located in our Northwest Region Office (NWRO)inShoreline, WA.

Please Note: The salary posted above includes the additional 5% premium pay that this position will receive due to this position's location in King County.

As a Public Outreach Specialist, you will work independently, and as part of a team, to plan, prioritize, develop and implement professional public involvement activities and requirements of the Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) at hazardous waste cleanup sites. You will oversee implementation of public involvement by contractors and/or potentially liable parties. You will get an opportunity to develop site-specific and regional TCP public involvement/community outreach strategies and plans. You will also provide expertise and training to TCP staff.

The Toxics Cleanup Program is a highly productive team of multi-skilled individuals who work closely together both individually and on a variety of teams to solve challenging problems. The TCP-NWRO Section works on several high-profile projects in the state of WA.

The mission of the Toxics Cleanup Program (TCP) is to protect Washington's human health and the environment by preventing and cleaning up pollution and supporting sustainable communities and natural resources for the benefit of future and current generations.

DuringHealthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery,employees are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. This position is required to work in the office one day a week. Ecology is following current state guidance regarding mask requirements, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing. Looking ahead, Ecology has recently updated the agency policies on telework and flexible and compressed work schedules. What you will do:

Required Qualifications:

Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational and volunteer experience. A total of seven (7) years of experience and/or education combined as described below:

  • Professional level Experience: in environmental analysis or control, environmental planning, environmental education, community outreach, or communications activities. Some experience working with impacted communities with a variety of cultures.

  • Education: involving a major study in environmental, physical, or natural science, education, communications or closely related field.

You will work closely with Executive staff members who often manage sensitive records and have challenging time constraints.
