Please note: This is a Part-Time RN position for School Health in Mecklenburg County. You are asked to commit to two or three days per week with the expectation to keep those days consistent.
Position Summary
This is a public health nurse position that works primarily in a school setting but may work in an office, clinical or other community setting.
Performs work with individuals, groups, or families to plan or implement programs designed to improve the overall health of communities. This position may have onsite or offsite supervision, assesses patient health problems, and needs; develops and implement nursing care plans; administer nursing care to patients and/or delegates tasks to unlicensed assistive personnel; advises patients on health maintenance and disease prevention; and provides care management.
The Mecklenburg County Public Health (MCPH) School Health Program provides general nursing services for students enrolled in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). This is an hourly part-time non-benefit position. Part-Time RN assignment will be determined based on school health program needs. Work hours may vary dependent upon school assignment(s). Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) in North Carolina
All Registered Nurses employed by the Mecklenburg County Health Department are Public Health Nurses. Public Health Nurses, regardless of official title or classification, may provide nursing services during urgent and/or emergent public health events. These services include, but are not limited to, administration of immunizations for various ages and groups, mass medication distribution, and provision of health services in shelter environments.
Essential Functions
Ensure compliance with agency policies, procedures, and protocols, as well as Board of Nursing laws, rules, and standards.
Perform specific health care procedures and/or treatments under standing orders or orders from the student's health care provider.
Administer daily and PRN (as needed) medications and nursing care procedures prescribed by the student's physician; train unlicensed assistive personnel to perform delegable tasks for instances when the nurse is absent or not available.
Initiate's emergency procedures for students and staff as needed.
Develop emergency action plans (EAP's) and individual health plans (IHP's)
Provide consultation to school teams to assure that medical accommodations are made to support optimal learning (e.g., IEP and Section 504 teams).
Orient the school staff and teaches specific medical procedures for students who may have special health care Needs that must be addressed in the classroom.
Assess compliance with immunization laws; participate in special immunization clinics provide by Mecklenburg County Public Health; may be assigned to administer immunizations during the clinics.
Assume responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management, and referral related to student health conditions that occur or become evident at school.
Provide health counseling/classes and education to students, parents, school staff, and others on nutrition, disease prevention, chronic diseases, healthy lifestyles, and health promotion topics to facilitate responsible decision - making.
Document health services per Program policy using an electronic health record system.
Present, train, and maintain appropriate standards from OSHA regarding contact with, and possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious body materials within the school or employment setting.
Provide health education and anticipatory counseling.
Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
Act as a liaison between the school, home, public health professionals, health care providers, and other community agencies.
Coordinate presentations by various agencies and professionals on pertinent health care topics as requested by school staff.
Maintain school health office equipment and assesses/maintains stock of consumable supplies.
Mecklenburg County Health Department employees: Respond in cases of urgent and/or emergent events that require public health interventions. Employees may be trained for and assigned duties unrelated to their regular work; work outside normal business hours and workdays and/or in a different work location may be required. Emergency events include, but are not limited to, communicable disease outbreaks, severe weather situations (e.g., snow or ice storms, tornados, hurricanes), natural disasters (e.g., earthquakes), fire, or power outages, and acts of terrorism.
Minimum Quelifications:
Experience:
Minimum of two years of professional nursing experience, preferably in child health, school health, public health, home health, or emergency nursing.
Candidates must have active nursing experience within the last 5 years.
Education:
Graduate from an accredited/approved nursing education program.
Non-BSN incumbents are required to complete state Public Health nursing coursework and exams within a year of hire.

Licenses and Certifications
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in NC issued by the NC Board of Nursing or another Nurse Licensure Compact State.
Certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) by the American Heart Association that is valid for at least 90 days after hire. Maintenance of this certification is required and as funds are available may be supported as part of employment.
May require a valid North Carolina or South Carolina driver's license.
May require County Driving Privileges
May require an Annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check required.
May require an annual Mecklenburg County Human Resource background screening

Tuberculosis (TB) skin testing, or Interferon Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) documentation
