The Johnston County Health Department has a full-time Public Health Nurse II (Communicable Disease Nurse) position open.
Duties and Responsibilities
PHN II with the Preventive Health Division. Will work in general clinics as assigned.
Requires ability to plan and coordinate program requirements; ability to elicit needed information and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and community partners. Coordinate Adult Immunization and Infection Control Program by identifying needs, monitoring reports and data, and responding in a timely manner. Assure that proper reporting; counseling, education, screening and treatment for clients and staff completed.
Ability to interpret and apply federal, state and local public health laws, rules and regulations. Assure agency compliance with infection control policies and procedures including occupational exposure and vaccine requirements.
Plan, administer and coordinate all services pertaining to the Infection Control and Adult Immunization Programs. Implement and maintain follow-up of patients referred from other hospitals, clinics and private physicians.
Act as liaison between the State Immunization Section and other county agencies/private physicians to enforce state guidelines. Train new public health nurses employed by Johnston County Health Department according to Protocols and related electronic record systems. Work closely as a team with Health Department staff and Communicable Disease nurses to treat and manage care of clients.
Function in STD Clinic in the expanded nurse role providing screenings of clients, once trained. Assist Epidemiology Nurse Supervisor in planning and implementing primary, preventive and rehabilitative care for Epidemiology patients and their families. Home visits are necessary at times.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of, and skill in, the application of nursing theory, practice, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs; considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and practices of public health; knowledge of available resources and organizations and the ability to coordinate these as needed; general knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health, including health disparities; ability to plan, coordinate, and oversee the work of others; ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions; ability to work in partnership with patients and with other service providers to elicit needed information and to maintain effective working relationships; ability to record accurately services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions; adequate computer skills to allow communication, patient record documentation, and accessing of information.

Minimum Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience. Necessary Special Qualifications
A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the N. C. Board of Nursing.
