LOCATION OF POSITION

POSITION DUTIES

This position will act as a research and development scientist by conducting applied research to develop new microbiology laboratory testing procedures for infectious disease agents
related to newly emerging/reemerging infections and anti-microbial resistance at the
State Public Health Laboratory as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality
public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and
well-being of the people in Maryland from infectious/communicable diseases.
Additional validations and verifications will be assigned on an as-needed basis and
may involve working in both a Biosafety 2 and Biosafety 3 environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:�� A Master's degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.
Experience: One year of experience performing public health applied research and development in a university, private or public health laboratory system.
Notes:
1.Candidates may substitute the possession of a Doctorate degree�from an accredited college or university in any of the disciplines noted above�for the required experience.
2.Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate must possess 2 years experience developing and maximizing the performance of real-time PCR diagnostic assays for the detection of human pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess the following:

Experience with validation and verification of diagnostic microbial assays, including various antimicrobial susceptibility methods, in a CLIA compliant matter

Experience writing experimental protocols, analyzing data and writing standard operating procedures, as well as progress reports and assisting in grant writing

Experience in biosafety level 2 microbiological testing

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
