Ohio's law requires that all babies born in the state receive newborn metabolic screening. The Ohio Department of Health's (ODH) Newborn Screening (NBS) program identifies newborns at risk for many rare but serious health conditions and provides case management to assure these infants receive appropriate diagnostic evaluation and medical management. Infants with these rare health conditions often appear healthy at birth and only come to medical attention because of newborn screening. Diagnosis and treatment in the neonatal period can prevent serious problems with growth and development and prevent death.
