We are proud to be growing our WIC Breast Feeding Program! We have been awarded a grant that will allow additional support to the WIC pregnant and breastfeeding community. The funding period for this position ends June 30, 2021.

Hours: Approximately 15 hours per week, set schedule TBD.

Hourly Rate: $15.00

The Breast Feeding Peer Counselor will provide basic information about breastfeeding to WIC mothers during thier pregnancy, and after the baby is born. Through encouragement; they will help mothers find help if problems occur.

Qualifications/Experience: Have breastfed at least one baby (do not have to be currently breastfeeding). Enthusiatic about breastfeeding and want to help other mothers enjoy positive experience. You must be able to work about 15 hours per week; posses a telephone, and be willing to make phone calls from home. Reliable transportation is also a requirement for this position.

License: Current/Unexpired North Carolina Drivers License.

Primary Duties:

  • Counsel pregnant and breastfeeding mothers from your telephone, hospitals, at home and in the WIC clinic setting on benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming barriers and common concerns.

  • Provide basic breastfeeding information and support to expectant and new mothers.

  • Make home visits to new mothers.

  • Refers mothers to community and program resources according to clinic-established protocols.

  • Keep accurate records of all contacts made with WIC mothers.

  • Assist with breastfeeding classes or support groups.

  • Attend monthly staff meetings; conferences as apporpriate, and contiues to keep current on breastfeeding subject matter through assigned books and materials.

  • May assit WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned.

Skills:
Ability to establish and maintain effective communication with clients, co-workers and the general public. Basic computer word processing skills; Spanish language skills desirable.

Benefits: There will be a required 4 day training consisting of 4 hours each; you may bring your nursing baby.
