Under the general and direct supervision of the Project Director and Chair of the Division of Public Health and Community Dentistry, the Quality Improvement Specialists will support the UCLA Dental Transformation Initiative (DTI) Local Dental Pilot Project (LDPP) to implement new oral health services and practices into medical and dental workflows. A Quality Improvement Specialist acts as a trusted advisor to healthcare providers across the County of Los Angeles, helping providers adopt oral health best practices, comply with Federal and State regulations and improve outcomes. This position also requires the Quality Improvement Specialist to assist with recruitment of program participants.

The Quality Improvement Specialist (QIS) supports the UCLA DTI LDPP and is responsible for leading and facilitating quality improvement and safety initiatives as a content expert, performance improvement facilitator, and educator. The QIS position is a client-facing role, responsible for managing a large number of client relationships and keeping client projects on track. The QIS will effectively manage client communications and engagement, working directly with physicians, dentists, providers, clinical staff and office managers to implement quality improvement initiatives. The QIS incumbent will also be responsible for data and event monitoring, peer review coordination, facilitation of QI efforts utilizing improvement methodologies, and providing appropriate education to the provider teams. The Quality Improvement Specialist will promote the improvement of patient care and population health within clinics, by providing direct-to-provider technical assistance towards the achievement of clinical quality and process improvement goals and participation in quality reporting programs. Demonstrated project management skills and excellent organizational skills. Must be able to perform and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously and efficiently, and manage conflicting and changing priorities under minimal supervision. Able to anticipate information needed by others as situations and projects develop and exercise sound judgment on when to refer to higher-level management.


Demonstrated leadership, quality improvement and problem resolution skills.


Ability to work independently and as a productive team member in varied activities and projects. Manage and prioritize own time and use sound judgment skills to handle non-routine matters.


Strong interpersonal skills and ability to maintain a positive attitude and cooperative working relationship with others at all times. Persistence in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner as required. Demonstrated ability to work well with individuals from diverse personnel levels, cultures and backgrounds under challenging situations.


Demonstrated capacity to build relationships and effective collaborations with diverse community partner organizations and policy makers.


Knowledge and understanding of systems and public and private sector organizations serving children and families.


Experience working in underserved communities and a thorough appreciation for the challenges they experience. Demonstrated understanding of concepts of systems change and the importance of early childhood interventions.


Demonstrated effective written and oral communications skills. Experience writing reports and summarizing research and/or project performance.

3+ years of relevant experience in a health care setting (preferably in a pediatric or primary care office), including work experience in quality improvement.


Experience using MS Office software and data entry/management.


An inquisitive and innovative nature, with excellent critical and analytical thinking skills.


Integrity and willingness to step into new roles.


A team-focused mentality, and a commitment to continuously learning and improving.


Ability to lead and motivate clinical practice staff to adopt and implement new quality improvement initiatives.


Ability to manage staff in a matrix environment.


Experience working in a clinical setting or familiarity with clinical operations.


Bachelor's or Master's degree.


Demonstrated knowledge of measurement and reporting of clinical processes in ambulatory settings.


Prior work experience within the medical, oral or public health arena.


Record of consistent and dependable performance of full-time work. Willing to work outside regular hours when occasionally required for project activities.


Ability to frequently travel to client practices (community clinics, hospitals, private practices) throughout Los Angeles County
