Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

As the University's Chief Academic Officer, the Provost has broad responsibilities for advancing the education and research missions of the University. The Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (OEVCP) provides the leadership for UNC-CH's strategic planning for academic programs. The Provost's organization ensures the development and enhancement of high quality baccalaureate, masters and doctoral-level programs through ongoing program review and assessment, the raising of academic standards, and the expansion of research and other scholarship/creative activity.

Position Summary

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

Under the direction of the Vice Provost for Strategy and Resource Management and the executive leadership team of the Office of the Provost, the Public Communications Specialist creates original content for the Provost website and affiliated websites, maintains a robust social media presence, drafts news releases, promotes events, programs and presentations, and produces multimedia content showcasing the work of the Office of the Provost and its affiliates and celebrating our outstanding faculty. Other responsibilities include events promotion, and creating materials such as fact sheets and presentations that support the mission and vision of the Provost. This position will also work with the Office of the Provost and its affiliate units to coordinate the maintenance and delivery of all related policies and forms, to ensure consistent writing and design style and readability, as well as timely updates.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Knowledge of and experience in communications planning, writing, editing and design, along with excellent written and verbal communications skills.

  • Ability to develop sound strategies for effective communications; execute a tactical plan; manage project timelines; and develop and maintain excellent working relationships with key colleagues and customers.

  • Must be a self-directed writer/editor/social media specialist who can work independently and perform tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Familiarity with digital and social media, and news and feature writing. Experience with website development and demonstrated proficiency with software, such as: MS Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Piktochart, and Canva.

  • Extraordinary skill at the English language, and be able to assume the appropriate voice for a wide variety of messages and media.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Experience in policy-related communications and/or translating complicated information into plain language.

  • Proficiency in WordPress is strongly preferred. Experience in email marketing platforms such as iContact.

  • Experience in AP style and writing for both print and digital media.

  • Knowledge and understanding of a higher education environment and audiences.

  • Training in rhetoric and dialectic.
