The Public Communication Specialist position will be responsible for establishing, developing and implementing a comprehensive Chemistry department communication plan and strategy. The communication plan is targeted internally and externally to include methods for initiating, developing, and maintaining working relationships with key internal and external individuals and organizations by continually keeping department, alumni, donors, campus, colleagues, and others abreast of developments in teaching and research within UNC-Chapel Hill Chemistry.

This role will include understanding the mission, objectives and goals of a department to establish the most effective ways to successfully and strategically communicate by strategizing, planning, writing, editing and producing content and images for the Chemistry external and internal websites, department newsletter, social media, public display monitors, solicitations, and department seminars. This position will manage and oversee the communication that is essential for the department of Chemistrys inward and outward facing presence in the scientific community. Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following: * Work extensively with databases including database maintenance. * Search, identify, and analyze relevant funding sources for faculty/staff and initiating strategic follow-ups with faculty/staff for more in-depth discussions, or connecting them to appropriate research staff and resources. * Interact with funding agencies. * Represent the Office of Research as the communication liaison. * Maintain GRS website(s) and social media and provide content management. * Consult with faculty/staff on short- and long-term research strategy and assist with research development programming and presentation of local training programs relevant to research strategy and communication. * Travel will be required from time to time for training purposes and as mandated by duties.
