Our client, Visit California, seeks a qualified Public Affairs Manager. You will be responsible for executing a global public affairs program for Visit California with the goal of promoting the relevance of Californias tourism industry. Responsibilities include developing strategies, managing communications tools, and providing oversight of PR agencies and Visit California staff who execute public affairs strategies. Assist with crisis communication strategy and partner engagement. Work closely with the Communications and Executive teams on all facets of public affairs. Communicate with stakeholders to change or shift perspective on issues affecting the state of California and travel and tourism.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Estimated % of Time Activity

40% - Act as point person and project manager for Visit Californias public affairs agency. Develop public affairs strategies and communications plans around ongoing initiatives, including California Tourism Month, Project: Time Off, etc.

20% - Enhance Visit Californias relationships with Tier 1 media. Respond to media inquiries. Draft correspondence and media messages to meet outreach needs at the request of the President/CEO, Vice Presidents and senior staff members. Manage press relations for executives and senior staff. Develop reports communicating program results for internal audiences, industry partners and key stakeholders.

20% - Manage and develop content for online properties devoted to Public Affairs/Travel Matters messaging. Oversee ongoing content strategy for public- and industry-facing digital communications.

10% - Manage aspects of crisis communications, including developing consumer-facing content, overseeing crisis tracking tools, briefing staff, interactions with industry partners and making ongoing updates to Crisis Communications plans.

10% - Other duties as assigned by supervisor.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each key duty satisfactorily:

  • Bachelors degree in communications, public relations, media relations or related field.
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience in public relations, media relations, or communications.
  • Ability to identify communications opportunities and develop supporting programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, specifically including expertise in AP styles. Persuasive writing experience is a plus.
  • Strong editing skills paired with a strong creative sensibility and strategic mindset.
  • Agency or Destination Marketing Organization experience a plus, tourism industry experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products, web browsers, and other graphics and presentation software.

Provides PA support to KP facilities, including communications and event planning. Builds key partnerships in the communities that support KP's community benefit, community relations and marketing objectives. Sets own daily priorities to meet goals and objectives developed under the direction of the Public Affairs Director. Enhances KPs image in the community by developing and promoting program and region-wide community relations, community benefit, government relation programs, which demonstrate the organization's commitment to its social mission. This is the second job in a three level Public Affairs generalist ladder. At this level, the representative contributes to projects of complex and diverse scope that require in-depth analysis. Representative manages projects within defined parameters and exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies. Essential Functions: * Represents KP in the communities we serve and represents Public Affairs in the facilities. Analyzes, interprets and develops solutions for complex internal and external issues and projects in support of KP's PA and organizational objectives. . * Provides communication support for key projects, activities and issues for facilities as needed. Supports the implementation of communications initiatives, strategies and tactics to promote KP organizational messages to key internal and external audiences. Develops work plans, produces deliverables and coordinates with other stakeholders. Develops collateral materials and implements programs specific to issues and projects. * Develops and maintains relationships with community groups, business groups, schools and local government officials/staffs including city, county and district offices. Identifies opportunities for new partnerships and programs with internal and external groups. Facilitates active participation among KP staff and physicians in community volunteer opportunities for KP- sponsored events * Assists in supporting community benefit programs. Coordinates and oversees events including VIP visits, health fairs, community events, job shadowing, internal campaigns and initiatives. * Supports the implementation of philanthropic strategies to improve community health as well as growth and initiatives for member retention. Basic Qualifications: Experience * Minimum three (3) years of experience in community relations, community health, communications and/or public relations. Education * Bachelor's degree in public health, public relations/communications or related field OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field. * High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required. License, Certification, Registration * N/A Additional Requirements: * Significant understanding of the health care environment and local government policy issues. * Established ties to the communities KP serves. * Excellent written and verbal presentation and interpersonal skills. * Excellent project management, organization and consulting skills. * Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
