The Part-Time Writing Specialist reports to the Manager and assists with the administration and development of the writing services program. A secondary focus of the position is to provide tutoring sessions either by appointment or for drop-in students for both graduate and undergraduate students. This position provides direct writing support for students and student tutors. The Part-Time Writing Specialist will work to continuously adapt and grow the writing services program to meet the needs of the entire university.

Position Duties

  • Developing and facilitating training for the writing services tutoring staff.

  • Planning, designing, and conducting writing labs, workshops, and programming.

  • Working with the writing staff to develop resources for Pace students, tutors, and instructors.

  • Promoting the Learning Commons and Writing Support to the Pace community through classroom visits, participation in campus events, and distribution of digital and print marketing materials.

  • Working with faculty to build sustainable partnerships, identify areas of needed writing support for students, and provide faculty with resources.

  • Observing tutoring sessions to assess tutors and the training program.

  • Participating in ongoing assessment of writing center polices and services offered.

  • Participating in staff development workshops and community building.

  • Providing tutoring sessions either by appointment or for drop-in students for both graduate and undergraduate students.

  • Conducting research on writing center scholarship, as well as theories of teaching and learning, to present to coordinator and tutoring staff.

  • Participating in recruitment, selection, and interviewing of tutoring staff.

  • Developing knowledge of learning commons.

  • Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Supervision Exercised

This position will assist the Writing Support Manager in supervision and training of the student tutors and will be responsible for supervision of Writing Support services in the absence of the manager.

Work Hours

Exact hours to be determined with supervisor; generally up to 20 hours per week. Able to work in person on campus for all assigned hours as needed.

  • Bachelor's degree (master's preferred) in English, Composition, Rhetoric, and/or Writing Studies required.

  • Previous teaching/tutoring experience preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Able to motivate and encourage students.

  • Able to communicate with academic staff, advisors, and professors.

  • Desire to help others and the ability to deliver outstanding customer service.
