The City of San Marcos is currently hiring for a Part Time Recreation Maintenance Specialist position to support the Parks & Recreation Department.

Under general supervision, performs a variety of manual, skilled, or semi-skilled duties related to construction and maintenance of buildings, park restrooms, and facilities. You'll be involved in painting, plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, mechanical work, hardware installation, furniture removal and installation, and applying finishes.

Part time employment with the City of San Marcos is limited to no more than 999 hour per fiscal year and an average of 20 hours per week, based on the approved budget for this position.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Performs a wide variety of manual, skilled, and semi-skilled construction and maintenance work, including digging trenches, placing and finishing concrete, loading and unloading vehicles, moving materials and equipment, litter abatement, and painting.

  • Repairs water leaks, digging underground water lines, and removing concrete or asphalt.

  • Undertakes minor building repairs using necessary hand tools and equipment such as pipe wrenches, drills, cutters, drain snakes, augers, plungers, and unclogging toilets and urinals when necessary.

  • Operates motor-driven equipment and trucks on streets, highways, and over terrain; operates hand and portable power tools.

  • Moves, hauls, repairs, or replaces various materials. This includes office furniture, equipment, recyclable materials, and trash.

  • Performs janitorial tasks such as vacuuming carpets, cleaning restrooms, power washing, mopping floors, cleaning glass, and disposing of waste.

  • Cleans, maintains, and properly stores tools and equipment; performs minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment; cleans, maintains, and stores equipment.

  • Cleans and maintains restrooms and park structures.

  • Repair or replace restroom fixtures, lighting, etc.

  • Uses chemicals and/or other supplies.

  • Maintains simple records; reads and interprets directions and sketches.

  • Provides and participates in emergency responses, which, while not all-inclusive, may include traffic control for extended periods, continual and strenuous sandbagging, emergency repairs to public facilities, assisting with evacuations, etc.

  • Routinely operates the following light and medium power-driven equipment: aerial lift, air compressor and other miscellaneous tools. Performs other related work as required.

  • Other duties as assigned.

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

Tools, equipment, materials, and techniques used in construction and building maintenance; general construction and maintenance procedures and methods; safe working practices; use of hazardous chemicals common to construction and maintenance activities; principles of customer service; operation and preventive maintenance procedures of power and other equipment relative to construction and maintenance; basic electrical principles; general understanding of the California Vehicle Code.

Ability to:

Perform strenuous physical work with agility and endurance; work in cooperative manner with others and contribute to a successful team effort; use and properly operate assigned tools and equipment; operate assigned trucks and equipment, observing legal and defensive driving practices; understand and follow oral and written instructions; read, write, speak, and understand English in order to communicate with fellow employees and the public and to follow safety precautions and procedures; demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community; and establish and maintain effective working relationships and contribute to a cooperative team effort.

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:

Completion of the twelfth grade, or equivalent.

Experience:

One year of experience in public works construction and maintenance, including at least six months manual labor experience involving the use of hand tools and portable power tools.
