Applicants do not need to be certified to apply.

Uncertified applicants must meet the prerequisites, as stated below, set by American Red Cross before being offered employment. An assessment of these skills will be conducted as part of the interview process.

Lifeguarding Course Prerequisites

• Swimming Requirements Test

• Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.

• Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.

• Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: swim 20 yards (no goggles allowed), surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve 10 lb. object, re-surface, return the object to your starting point and place object on deck, exit the water without using steps/ladder.

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator and/or Pool Manager, serves as a Lifeguard at City aquatic facilities as assigned. Ensures safe swimming facilities for patrons and teaches swimming lessons. Performs other related duties as assigned. Incumbents of these positions are scheduled to work approximately 30 - 40 hours per week during the spring/summer pool season as assigned. (April 1, 2024 through September 15, 2024)

Essential Job Duties

• Closely watches assigned pool/aquatic activities.

• Administers first aid where necessary.

• Keeps assigned facility clean and safe for patrons.

• Teaches swimming lessons.

• Oversees pool parties and other special events as needed.

• Collects and records fees received.

• Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements of Position

• Must possess or be able to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification, which includes First Aid and CPR/AED certification, prior to pool opening dates. Paid training and certification course are provided.

• Minimum 16 years of age.Ability to deal tactfully, cooperatively, and courteously with all callers, facility users of all ages, and the general public.

• Ability to perform basic mathematical computations and to collect and accurately record fees received.

• Ability to work variable hours as assigned, including early mornings, weekends, holidays, etc.

• Ability to pass a criminal background check.

• Ability to pass post-offer drug screen.

Currently certified lifeguards will have the opportunity to obtain a Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) Certification.
