Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.

Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern

Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.

Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for a PT Intramural & Recreation Specialist. The purpose of this position is to coordinate intramural and recreational programs for students an provide operational and program support for the fitness center.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

Knowledge of college recreation programs and college fitness and wellness programs. Knowledge and skills to develop, plan and implement a wide variety of college recreational sport

programs for a diverse student population. Ability to operate independently with general direction in developing organized and safe programs and activities for college students. Knowledge of promotions and marketing of college recreation program participation.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Knowledge and skills needed to oversee day-to-day operations of fitness centers, including industry standards for cleaning and basic maintenance.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Strong customer service skills. Knowledge of proper participant conduct during recreational play, and ability to uphold conduct standards during participation.

Computer skills with knowledge of word processing, database, spreadsheets, and web applications used for intramural leagues. Ability to work some evenings, weekends, or non-traditional hours in support of college fitness, recreation, and intramural sport events. Must be able to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Driver's license required. CPR/First Aid Required (or ability to obtain within first two months of employment).

Additional Considerations

A combination of knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree, supplemented by training in recreational or sports management. Experience working in a fitness or recreation facility.

Experience in planning tournaments and leagues for intramural or recreational sports. Ability to set up equipment needed to play in a sports facility (volleyball net, soccer goals, etc.) Experience working in a college setting working with students is desired. Specialized certification from at least one of the following agencies: ACE, AFFA, ACSM, ISSA is preferred, but not required.
