PT Faculty Environmental Science & Sustainability

What we're looking for:

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU) is a world-class STEM university that dares to imagine a new type of education that pushes where the world is going next, even when the world pushes back. We're not shackled by tradition or a time-tested rule book. Instead, we built our anchor point around a dedication to curiosity, creativity, and a relentless focus on imagining what a future-proof education can and should look like. This is an audacious mindset. And it's one that we commit to wholeheartedly with each new endeavor we introduce. Simply put, we do things differently here. We invest in what matters. We pivot and evolve when we need to. Because we aren't an institution. We're an engine.

HU is specifically designed to foster economic lift through innovative academic and research programs in response to regional and global needs. To help with that work, we seek Part Time Faculty

  • Environmental Science & Sustainability dedicated to nurturing critical wisdom in an evolving, learner-centric institution. Someone defined not by their discipline but rather by their ethical approach to reshaping traditional higher education, fully active learning mindset, and future-focused curricular lens. We are looking for a unique mix of learners, leaders, and impact-driven educators.

This means somebody with at least these three characteristics:

  • A deep determination to make a positive difference every day in service to learners and the university.

  • Fearless optimism coupled with a fierce desire to change the lives of learners through the design and implementation of a technology-enabled, outcomes-driven, formative learning environment.

  • Endless desire to learn and lead while creatively shaping skills-focused curricular pathways.

Classes Available

  • Harrisburg Campus

The following courses are intended to be offered on-site, but with the right combination of expertise, innovation, and familiarity with teaching in an online environment, there is a possibility of a hybrid learning space.

  • ENVS 100
  • ENVS Studies Seminar

  • W 11:10-12:10 (1 credit)

  • This introductory seminar class serves to orient the student with both the Environmental Science and Sustainability program offerings as well as possible career paths accessible to the student graduating with a degree in Environmental Science and Sustainability. Additionally, this course will highlight the importance of communication, teamwork, collaboration, and civic engagement in promoting environmental stewardship.

  • ENVS 201 - Intro to Geology

  • MWF 10:05-11:05 (3 credits)
  • This course is designed to give the student a tour through the planet Earth; from the inside to the outside and from the past to the present. The large-scale structure of the Earth, formation of mountains, explosive processes like volcanoes, earthquakes, and how water, glaciers, and other weather processes can shape the landscape are covered.

  • ENVS 230 - Soils in the Critical Zone

  • This course centers on the overlap of soil science, environmental science, and geology. Our goal is to explain the fundamental principles in soil sciences and introduce the concept of the "Critical Zone," where water, rock, biology, and atmosphere interact as a system. Three hours of lecture, three hours of laboratory per week.

The pay structure is based on degree earned, number of students enrolled within the course, and how many credits.

Nice to haves:

The candidate has a minimum of a master's level certification, and we prefer cross-contextual teaching experience. We are looking for a strong mix of autonomy and independence, organizational leadership, a high level of personal integrity and emotional intelligence, and an intense desire to shape the future of higher education in Pennsylvania and beyond. This will require demonstrated values for active learning and verifiable evidence of your ability to serve in a learner-facing role.
