Summary

The part-time ESL Placement Advisor is responsible for bridging the process between admissions and enrollment by placing and advising ESL (English as a second language) students. The advisor connects ESL students with placement testing, non-credit, or credit pathways in ESL. The ESL Placement Advisor counsels prospective and current ESL students according to the policies and procedures of the college-level, credit-based and non-credit ESL program at LCCC. This position also assists in the development of procedures that maximize the efficiency of the ESL placement and advising process, collection and interpretation of data, and collaboration with student service departments on campus, including the noncredit ESL program. The ESL Placement Advisor reports directly to the Dean of Academic Support and Success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for assisting ESL students to navigate from application to credit testing or non-credit course placement.

  • Responsible for students by appointment (on campus and online) and on a walk-in basis in Schnecksville, Tamaqua, and/or Allentown.

  • Serves as the contact person for each student and advises students on ESL programs, course registration, placement testing, and tuition based on citizenship/eligible noncitizenship/residency status.

  • Assists in connecting students with computer-based ESL placement tests regularly on campus, online, and off-site when necessary.

  • Evaluate ESL placement test results for linguistic proficiency and accurately recommend correlated ESL courses.

  • Provides advising to students as needed through the duration of the ESL program for successful retention and persistence.

  • Assists students in the academic transition from the ESL program to college degree and/or career goals.

  • Develops and maintains strong knowledge of the ESL curriculum at LCCC and in higher education.

  • Collaborates with appropriate campus departments to provide accurate information on tuition, financial aid, billing procedures, and payment options.

  • Refers students to appropriate campus resources, such as tutoring, coaching, and counseling.

  • Keeps up to date on TESOL best practices and attends related professional development opportunities on and off campus.

  • Attend staff meetings and maintain the operations manual.

  • Responsible for upholding College policies, including FERPA regulations.

  • Maintains an equitable, multicultural, student-centered environment.

  • Advises all students as needed by the department.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required

Education

  • Master's degree in a related field from an accredited institution.

  • Foreign degrees - must provide a US equivalency report of your degree credentials with your transcript, if not, your resume will not be accepted.

Certifications

  • Act 153 Clearances (Act 34 PA Criminal Background, Act 151 PA Child Abuse History, Act 114 FBI Clearance Fingerprinting)

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • 1-2 years of experience working with English Learners (ELs).

  • Knowledge of language proficiency assessment

  • Experience working with international/immigrant/multilingual populations.

  • Excellent spoken/written communication skills, interpersonal/intercultural skills, and organizational skills are necessary.

  • Solid analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent computer skills with experience using word processing, spreadsheets, databases, learning management systems, and video software.

  • Professional skills of teamwork/cooperation, initiative, customer service, and commitment to continuous professional growth.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in TESOL or TESOL certificate

  • ESL teaching experience in college

  • Bi-lingual- English/Spanish or English/Arabic.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk, and hear. The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. Regular use of computers, computer screens, and video platforms.
