Job Duties

The Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (NVMHI) is recruiting for a brand-new Psychology Supervisor position developed to address the increasing workload of the department. A successful applicant is organized, able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, and has strong organizational skills with an ability to meet deadlines. The incumbent should be able to quickly adapt to changes and make timely modifications to meet goals without disruption. We are most interested in finding a dedicated, driven leader with proven ability to effectively collaborate with others, empower staff to lead from where they stand, and provide coaching and support to a team.

NVMHI is a 134-bed state psychiatric hospital located in Northern Virginia, a suburb conveniently located near several public transportation routes and in close proximity to Washington, DC. The population we serve is comprised of individuals diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness, offering a rewarding experience unlike any other. Currently, half of our population is forensically involved, which provides a unique opportunity to provide and oversee treatment and evaluation of individuals with a multitude of clinical presentations and dispositions.

We are seeking a Licensed Clinical Psychologist to join our dynamic team. The Psychology Supervisor may be charged with providing treatment and evaluation of a small caseload and will be responsible for leading a team of highly skilled Clinical Psychologists and Psychology Associates in the delivery of a full range of psychological services, including the following: evaluating individuals' psychological stability and needs; leading in the formulation of meaningful treatment plans; providing group and individual therapies; developing and supervising behavioral interventions; conducting and interpreting psychological testing and writing practical, user-friendly reports; conducting forensic evaluations and writing thorough court-ordered and Commissioner-appointed evaluations; providing psychological consultation and education to hospital staff; and, participating in program development.

The compensation for this position is based on experience.

A writing sample will be required/completed at the time of interview.

This is a day shift position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited doctoral program in Clinical Psychology required

  • Must be licensed to practice clinical psychology in the Commonwealth of Virginia

  • Knowledge of and experience delivering services with a focus on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing required

  • Knowledge of group and individual treatment modalities and evidenced-based treatment for severely mentally ill populations

  • Ability to provide consultation and/or training to the behavioral health and legal communities

  • Must have prior experience assessing levels of clinical competencies and developing such competencies in subordinate clinical staff to ensure best practices

  • Must have the ability to function effectively as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team

  • Knowledge of and experience developing behavioral plans is required

Additional Considerations

  • Completion of the Commissioner approved forensic evaluation training program for Virginia strong preferred

  • Demonstrated understanding of the relevant Virginia Codes and psycholegal criteria for persons found incompetent to stand trial, insane at the time of the offense, and not guilty by reason of insanity is strongly preferred

  • Moral Reconation Therapy trained candidates are strongly preferred

  • Candidates trained to complete violence risk assessments using the HCR-20 V3 are strongly preferred.

  • Previous experience in inpatient settings and in forensic mental health treatment is strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated experience conducting forensic evaluations is strongly preferred

  • Experience providing expert testimony regarding forensic matters is preferred

  • Bilingual is preferred
