This position is located at Rockingham Youth Development Center, a secure facility in Reidsville NC (Rockingham County), with an overall mission to provide committed juveniles with a safe, secure environment that fosters healthy decision-making and personal responsibility.

The primary purpose of these positions is to provide mental health services for juveniles assigned to a Youth Development Center and/or Juvenile Detention Center. These services include, but are not limited to, mental status examinations, diagnostic evaluations and behavioral assessments, behavioral programming, individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention and direct counseling services at an advanced level.  Performance of these duties requires treatment team participation and ongoing staff consultation.

The position will be responsible for the following:

Mental Health Screening

Perform evidence-based mental health screenings for assigned new admissions and document results.

Mental Health Assessment

Complete a clinical interview and mental status examination for assigned new admissions and document results.

Psychological Evaluation

Complete psychological testing and evaluation report for assigned juveniles.

Mental Health Treatment

Complete a mental health treatment plan for each assigned new admission. Provide evidence-informed psychotherapeutic treatment as indicated.

Document the plan within 30 days of admission and treatment progress of each intervention session. Provide crisis assessment and intervention.

Criminogenic Needs Identification and Targeting

Identify prominent dynamic factors that affect the youth's risk for recidivism within 30 days of admission. Provide individual and group treatment targeting criminogenic needs to assigned youth. Assess for measurable improvement upon review of criminogenic needs.

Training/Continuing Education

Provide training to staff on behavioral issues as needed.

Attend continuing education seminars/workshops commensurate with scope and requirements of professional practice. Complete required trainings in the DPS Learning Management System.

On-call Rotation is required

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

The salary grade for this position is MH17.  State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position.

 If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity.  Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

Must be eligible for licensure in North Carolina under provisions specified by the Psychology Practice Act (G.S. 90-270). Applicants must fulfill all requirements for licensure in North Carolina as a Licensed Psychological Associate under provisions specified by the Psychology Practice Act (G.S. 90-270). Applicants who have completed a doctoral degree in Clinical, Counseling, or School Psychology from an APA accredited institution and completed a year-long pre-doctoral internship are encouraged to apply.

  • Working knowledge of cognitive-behavioral based treatment and intervention techniques.

  • Experience evaluating, screening and diagnosing clients for appropriate treatment; formulating clear goal-oriented treatment plans, and documenting progress of client treatment.

  • Experience establishing rapport and applying evidence-based interventions appropriate for the adolescent population.

  • Experience working with adolescents in crisis.

  • Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with administrative supervisors, clients and their families, care providers, and various organizational partners.

  • Experience expressing ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work efficiently.

  • Working knowledge of social, cultural, economic issues affecting clients.

Management Preference:

  • Management prefers fully licensed candidates.
