Program Summery

The Division of Health Psychology at the Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital is pleased to announce a position opening for a full-time psychologist in the Hartford HealthCare Ayer Neuroscience Institute. The position reflects a collaboration between the Neuroscience Institute and the Behavioral Health Network, which includes six hubs throughout the state. The psychologist will have the opportunity to work with individuals dealing with an array of neurological disorders, with an emphasis on supporting patients with epilepsy and psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES), but may also include other patient populations as well (e.g., stroke, head injury, etc.).

Job Summary

This is a very collaborative position, closely connected to the Neuroscience Institute providers, all of whom are aligned in the core mission of optimizing quality of life for people with neurological disorders, which often lead to secondary issues such as mood and anxiety disorders, disempowerment, PTSD, or other psychosocial sequelae. Providing services to patients in the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center will be a core element of the position, but opportunities for working with other patient populations exist, depending on the interests of the candidate. Specific experience with epilepsy and/or nonepileptic seizures is not required - rather, we are a seeking a clinician with a strong foundation in the field of health psychology who can apply those skills to patients living with epilepsy (or functional seizure disorder) and other neurological disorders. The psychologist will work closely with a psychiatrist and a social worker to craft a strong program to support the behavioral health of our population, and combat the biological and social barriers they often face. In addition, the psychologist is considered an integral part of the Neuroscience Institute, maintaining an office in the clinic and regularly attending multi-disciplinary faculty and clinical meetings (e.g., refractory epilepsy conference). Opportunities exist for program development, training, and research participation as well. Additional elements for this role include coordination of care with Social Work to identify community psychiatric and social services resources, connecting patients with primary and specialty care providers, educating other providers about relevant neurological conditions, and assisting patients in staying connected with community and state resources, school or vocational rehabilitation, volunteer opportunities, support groups, and other community supports.

A synopsis of duties includes:

  • Providing behavioral health services to adults, including diagnostic assessment and evaluation of treatment needs of medical patients on site, collaboration and consultation with medical providers, brief and evidence-based treatments for behavioral and mental health issues,

  • Effective utilization of screening measures and assessment tools,
