Summary

This vacancy announcement will be open continuous until 11/23/18 or until filled. The Open Continuous Announcement allows acceptance of applications until the final closing date. The first Cut-Off date for receipt/referral of applications to be considered will be 10/10/18; subsequent cut-off dates will be every two weeks thereafter.
Responsibilities

The Birmingham Veteran Affairs Medical Center (BVAMC) is seeking one (1) full-time permanent Psychiatrist for the Mental Health Service Line Team at the Jasper CBOC with the Birmingham VA Medical Center .

This Psychiatrist will coordinate and function as part of a multidisciplinary team providing outpatient mental health care to Veterans. The primary duties of this position will include screening, assessment, diagnosing and treatment of Veterans with acute and chronic psychiatric disorders according to standard and usual and acceptable methods and techniques.

This Psychiatrist will observe behaviors and reaction patterns to modify treatment plans and medications for mental health Veterans. This Psychiatrist will be expected to work independently and make appropriate referrals to the community or other professional resources, as needed. This Psychiatrist will lead interdisciplinary team members and provide clinical services to the Veterans.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-4:30 PM or 4 day 10 hour shifts. 1-2 days in person in Jasper CBOC or Anniston CBOC and the rest can be done face to face or telehealth from Birmingham.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements:
Satisfactory physical examination as determined by the Employee Health Unit upon appointment only. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 . Functional requirements include light lifting under 15 lbs, light carrying 15-44 lbs, walking and standing and standing for up to 8 hours, use of rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to read type written characters (glasses permitted), ability to hear the whispered voice (hearing aid permitted), repeated bending for up to 8 hours, etc.
