Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic is hiring a Full-Time Psychiatric Nurse to help support the 90% Integrated Health and Aging Program (IHAP 12th floor) for its Oakland location. This position will work day/evening rotation, with three 12 hour shifts.

The Integrated Health & Aging Program (IHAP) is a specialized program consisting of 42 beds serving older adults who are experiencing psychiatric issues in late life but also may be younger that are often complicated by physical, social, and environmental problems.

The Psychiatric Nurse is responsible for demonstrating clinical competence in the delivery of direct patient care and the implementation of the milieu management program.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains competency requirements.

  • Attends two unit-based or institute-wide inservices yearly.

  • Serves as mentor to students and new employees.

  • Learns and utilizes up-to-date technology in delivery of patients care.

  • Participates in interdisciplinary activities including, treatment team, staff meeting, co-worker feedback process and other committees as assigned.

  • Follows research protocols as required.

  • Performs a nursing assessment and initial plan of care within 8 hours of patient's admission.

  • Orients/educates patient regarding hospitalization.

  • Documents in the medical record according to established policies.

  • Maintains current knowledge of medication policies and practices, including side effects, dosage and patient response.

  • Completes medication administration safely and accurately, including transcription, administration and documentation according to established policies.

  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of DSM IV diagnosis as evidenced by individual, group and milieu therapeutic interventions.

  • Manages crisis situations effectively using positive approaches.

  • Adheres to Nursing Standards and Policies including ANA Standards for Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, ANA Professional Code for Nurses, the WPIC policies and procedures and the Nurse Practice Act.

  • Performs point of care testing per unit (i.e., glucose monitoring, urinalysis, Hemocults.)

  • Performs charge RN responsibilities competently and effectively.

  • Participates with unit management in Program Development and Performance Improvement Activities.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing required.

  • BSN preferred.

  • Six months of experience in Clinical Psychiatry preferred.

  • Successful completion of the central and unit specific orientation programs including the medication proficiency examination.

  • The incumbent must by physically capable of providing direct total physical care to unpredictable, potentially violent, mentally ill patients as necessary including lifting, supporting, running towards or away from areas where problems are occurring, and pushing and pulling equipment, such as, wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance

  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

  • Comprehensive Crisis Management

  • Registered Nurse

Serves as the "Lead Therapist" for the "Team" consisting minimally of a Mental Health Professional and a Mental Health Worker assigned to the consumer and his/her family. Accountable to the Program Manager for the treatment provided by the Team to the consumer and his/her family. 2. Assists Program Manager in supervising other members of the Team. 3.Directs and provides family-based therapy to assigned consumers and families using primarily the "structural family therapy" model of systemic intervention through sessions with individuals, family subsystems, or involved collaterals. 4.Employs additional treatment interventions including psychoeducational therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, recreational therapy, parent skill training, assertiveness training, modeling, coping skills training, and crisis intervention. 5.Assists consumers and families build working relationships with key providers in the larger community, educational and social services systems. Works with other service providers to arrange and/or coordinate family support services required by assigned consumers and families. 6.Engages the consumer and his/her family in a process, which allows the consumer and his/her family members to identify specific goals for the family-based services in order to maintain the consumer in the home. 7.Documents specific goals from intake to discharge and after-care planning for the consumer's medical record. 8. Maintains a maximum caseload of eight assigned consumers and families on a 24- hour/ 7-days per week basis in addition to scheduled sessions to assist with crisis situations. 9. Provides consumers and their families with options for day and evening hours for scheduling regular sessions and is available a minimum of two evenings per week for regularly scheduled sessions to assigned caseload. 10. Expected to meet agreed upon billable hours. * 60% of billable hours with partner * 40% of billable hours individually. 11.Shares on-call duties with other program staff of a regular rotation. 12. Maintains Team's program productivity standards. 13. Participates in family-based therapy training as mandated by the Office of Mental Health for a three-year period. 14. Attends other training on family systems, growth and development, structural family therapy, local resources for families and treatment documentation. 15. Participates in own performance process. 16. Possesses knowledge of age specific growth and development. 17. Maintains competence in identified universal, core, and critical competencies. 18. Performs other duties as requested.
